From Jody at the end of the last thread:

"We're going to need a bag of ice here. Injury report for Felix Pie is as follows:

'CF Felix Pie’s bid to earn a starting job has been slowed by surgery to fix a twisted testicle.'"

Discuss. Lynlee, feel free to provide any insight as to what an analagous injury would be for a woman. Twisted breast? Twisted sister?

We're not gonna take it!

Early morning wit. Thanks for that. I'm sure my last several picks have their own comic value. No need to thank me.

Interesting last two picks Tom. I think Cameron Maybin is actually Randy Johnson's illegitimate grandson. So congrats on picking the oldest and youngest players possible on consecutive rounds.

Screwball, I like it.

Supposedly Pie is only supposed to be out 3-5 days. Seems to be a short recovery time.

How do you describe this as a problem to your doctor:

Hey doc, does this look right to you?

Did he just twist one around, or did they twist around each other? Peter or Bish, you seen anything like this?

Jason, can you go ahead and let Avi know that it's his turn so that we can trick him into keeping the flow going?

Thanks goodness Joe has a keeper this round. He can continue to sleep through class.

Joe has keepers 3 of the next 4 rounds. Avi was included in my last email to put him on early notice that his pick is coming up.

It's obviously masterbation because it is only on one side. Otherwise, they would be working in tandem w/ no steering mechanisms.

Full speed ahead!! Nope, nope, back it up...wait, forward again...hold on, somebody make up their mind around here!!!

Blogger mymrbig said...

Evan, its not that hard. I know the guy with the twisted testicle was already kept, so just draft the guy with the anal fissure. Its not a longterm problem, really!

Speaking of anal fissures, am I the only one who gets one every time I have to wait more than 30 minutes between picks?

Wow, and I thought Tom taking geritric Big Unit was a little odd...now Lynlee takes a 55 year old retired catcher. Wow...thats a bit of a surprised. If you want an old retired catcher, couldn't you have gone for Johnny Bench or Carlton Fisk? Tony Pena wasn't even that great in his heyday!

Lists people, lists! I know I usually say send a list if you will be away from the computer for more than 4-6 hours, but feel free to send lists even if you will just be away an hour or two (or even less, if your pick is only 1 or 2 away). Its a courtesy to your fellow managers and it helps speed up the draft.

I promise, this draft is going to start crawling along when I'm at Disneyworld next week and Zack and Justin are both out of the country.

I never thought I would find the words testicle and anal in this discussion board. Is the draft going that slow? Just FYI - testicular torsion (aka twisted testicle) is just that. The "cord" connecting the testicle to the body twists. This could cut off the blood supply and cause the tissue to die if left this way for an extended period of time. This typically occurs in kids (mostly teens). It's actually fairly common....

8:30 PM, March 11, 2008

Blogger Unknown said...

Peter, any experience with anal fissures, or is that too personal of a question?

Crap, Rice loses again. 8-6, yuck. At least they usually finish the season by winning 22 of 24.

8:41 PM, March 11, 2008

Blogger ET said...

How does one discover that one of their testicles is twisted?

8:53 PM, March 11, 2008

Blogger Unknown said...

I heard that Henry Blanco was the first to notice. So if you have any questions, ask him.

8:54 PM, March 11, 2008

Blogger ET said...

Perhaps I should draft him as well, in case Pie has twists the other one during the season.

8:57 PM, March 11, 2008

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, tonight's game was horrible. I always hate it when Rice loses, but especially to UT. Basically two bad plays at 2nd gave them 6 runs. Not that it would have mattered since we only scored one.

Back to what's important. Usually you get pain associated with a torsed teste. Also it can become retracted as the twisted "cord" pulls it up. If it stay like this too long then it dies and has to be removed. Testicular torsion is a medical emergency.

Anal fissures? I'll let others deal with that one.

I was hoping a would get to pick tonight. I guess I'll try that before work in the am...

Yeah, Jody was up at the same time last night and didn't make his pick until morning, so I think we know something about his sleep schedule - its fairly normal (unlike those of us still writing comments at unreasonably late times).

9:16 PM, March 11, 2008

Blogger ET said...

Or, maybe something a little more helpful ... a Hideki Matsui pick at this point in the game would be awesome!

9:18 PM, March 11, 2008

Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you get a testicular torsion, you'll damn well know. It's a pretty excruciating pain, and you'll sometimes see retraction and color change. As evidenced by Pie's case, it's a surgical emergency. The kids that get it jump the whole triage line in our ER to get rushed to ultrasound. I'd say it just about tops the list of things I NEVER want to experience. Right above discussing Peter's anal fissure.

Hours of contemplation? Oh yes...you must mean the hours that you/we spend waiting for this end of the draft to make their picks.

Blogger Jody said...

I'm inclined to suggest a live draft from here on out, but I'm afraid I wouldn't have time to research every NL team's AA and Rookie Ball leagues for my Rounds #21-26 picks.

Looking at the remaining crop, Modecai "Three-Finger" Brown and Honus "The Flying Dutchman" Wagner might have just as much a chance of producing numbers as some of the cats still on the board.

1:08 PM, March 12, 2008

Who is Jack Cassel? Is he the Patriots 3rd stringer at QB?

1:40 PM, March 12, 2008

Blogger Unknown said...

Tom, I tried to call him back and it went straight to his voicemail. Thanks though.

I don't know who Cassel is, and picking an NL player I haven't heard of is a bit of a feat.

Lynlee - damn you for picking the guy I needed to back-up Hoffman. Its too early to pick up non-closer relievers don't you know? Apparently not since you have Lyon and Bell now...

1:43 PM, March 12, 2008

Blogger Lynlee said...

I thought he was picking Matt Cassel too, which is fine by me. Astros currently have Jack in the starting rotation, actually, which I think is what Bish intended.

There are no rules to this draft, Jason. Clearly. And Evan's the one who took Lyon - I'm clearly ok with Peña.

1:49 PM, March 12, 2008

Blogger ET said...

I thought I took Lyon. And, he's the closer according to the D-Backs. Is there something they should know? Did you mean Pena?

OK, Bish/Natalie get the strange pick award, but whatever. I'm an Astros fan who hasn't heard of Cassel. Their rotation is shit this year, but they certainly have more worthy guys than Cassel.

You sure you heard properly Lynlee?

Don't worry about the Houston staff, they upgraded the D over the winter by shipping out Everett and bringing in the ubiquitous Miguel Tejada. That should more than make up for any deficiencies in the staff.

How is it that no one has yet pointed out the fact that Evan now has both of the Dodgers' broken 3Bs?

I give it about 14 days before Nomar is done for the season with a twisted vagina and acute anal fissures. Meanwhile the younger LaRoche will throw out his back (again) while rehabbing his thumb on an X-box, causing "Porn-Stache" Colletti to panick and trade extra outfield X + #1 pitching prospect Y to Chicago/Detroit for Crede/Inge and Chan Ho Park's 38 year old cousin.

2:59 PM, March 12, 2008

Blogger ET said...

I'm just hoping Garciaparra doesn't fall to pieces in the first two months of the year. I got him to hold the spot for LaRoche. Perhaps I should dig deeper?

3:06 PM, March 12, 2008

Blogger Unknown said...

I think the Dodgers' 3rd 3b is also injured (and I'm not kidding). Its a cursed position!

3:25 PM, March 12, 2008

Blogger Lynlee said...

I wouldn't be surprised if Nomah gets "injured" simply so he doesn't have to play for Torre.

But as soon as you drop him, he'll pull through a pennant-series clinch homer. Just the kind of guy he is.

my bad everyone. Avi emailed me his pick last night. I wrongly assumed he had posted it, rather than just emailed it to me, so I ended up sitting on it for quite a while. I was pretty busy when he emailed the pick (and some of you know why).

Blogger Unknown said...

You need sleep? Me, Joe, Tom, Justin, and Zack were up till 4 AM CST (2 AM for Tom & Jerry, I mean Justin) for Zack's auction.

Let's just say it was enough to make us all appreciate having a slow draft in this league!

I went to be at 4:15 AM CST, Jenn's alarm was set for 5 AM. I feel awesome. Most beer I've had in 1 night since September, I'm getting old.

8:40 AM, March 13, 2008

I'm curious as to the attendance rate at work for the guys in the central time zone. I got less than 4 hours of sleep, but two less would really suck.

Whoever saw Evan's pick should just repost it.

9:03 AM, March 13, 2008

Posted Evan's pick (he emailed me and wanted to stick with it unless Bish/Natalie took him).

I got to sleep until 7:30, so I at least had around 3 hours of sleep. I think Jay was pounding on my head for 5 minutes before I woke up, saying "come on daddy, come on. I'm hungry and thirsty."

Or maybe it was the beer making my head pound...?

I leave on Saturday and have actually been meaning to address this.

My Treo does not let me view the picks we are making on this website. My old Treo did, but my new one freaks out and resets itself any time I click on the link to look at the comments.

So instead of continuing the draft here, is there any opposition to emailing your picks once people start heading out-of-town? People could post them here also to keep it updated, but it might be easier for the travelers to have the list of taken players in their email.

10:57 AM, March 13, 2008

Blogger ET said...

Rewire the stupid thing. People figured out how to hack the iPhone and you can't get your Treo to look at a comments page? Don't you have an engineering degree? You should be ashamed of yourself!

Well, that depends. If Stanford was playing UCLA, both Lopez twins would have somehow fouled out in the first half.

This is a huge game for Arizona....a trip to the dance could hinge on these next 12:15!

I think Arizona is in. Their record with their starting guards in the lineup is pretty good. Losing Wise for a bunch of games hurt because Bayless had to play the point. But, does it really matter? They aren't going to make a final four run (although they have enough talent to give some top teams trouble - obviously). It's hard to see that group putting 6 straight together, which they will have to do because they aren't going to be a high seed.

10:01 PM, March 13, 2008

Blogger ET said...

But, what they should do is get rid of the conference tournaments and expand the NCAA tourney to include all the teams. It would take less than 3 whole rounds. The good teams would get a couple extra cupcake games and then we wouldn't have this incessant whining from coaches and speculation from media about which teams are on the bubble and which have done enough.

Besides, is it fair for one mediocre team to have a shot at the NCAA tourney and another to have to go to the NIT?

You know you are tired when...

So I had like 3 hours of sleep 2 nights ago because of Zack's insanely late auction. Then last night my mother-in-law was playing at Tipitina's (she's in a band, that is a local music club). Anyway, that kept me away from home until almost 11 pm CST and I was dead tired. I tried to make a pick when I got home, but fell asleep at the computer (after emailing Evan saying the pick was coming). I woke up a few hours later, typed in a pick, forgot to hit the "Publish Your Comment" button, and then sent out an email saying I made my pick. Doh!

What? No blood or police in the story? How about a car chase? Make the story interesting/entertaining if you're going to tell us one...

I'm disappointed. I've actually heard of the cat Jason drafted.

For the West Coast guys, has Lute Olsen's absence affected Arizona or are there holes in the team that won't let them win more (i.e. good point guard).

I'm an LSU guy and can vouch for UCLA from when they beat us in the Final Four. They knew how to play defense. This year's team seems to have that plus offense w/ Shipp, Collison, and Love.

After a down year in Tiger Land and booting the coach, we'll probably lose our best player (Anthony Randolph) to the NBA. I'm canvassing for a new team to root for in the tournament. Of course, I will be rooting to make sure my bracket is the best...

8:22 AM, March 14, 2008

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Arizona isnt suffering much without Lute, since the interim coach is Kevin O'Neill, who has ample experience both in college and in the pros. They look iffy because they had the toughest schedule in the country (evidenced by a top-30 RIP even with an 18-13 record), their best player is a freshman (Jerryd Bayless, projected top ten pick in the draft), and starting point guard Nic Wise missed 6 weeks due to injury. Remember how bad UNC looked against Duke in that first game when they didnt have Lawson? Same thing here, except the rest of the team isnt as good and he was out for much longer. If they get into the tourney, they definitely could wreak some havoc, as long as they dont have to play a team with two 7-footers.

I haven't watched a ton of Arizona basketball, but I don't think F Chase Budinger makes the most of his potential. He has good size and athleticism and is decently skilled, but when I watch him play, there's something missing. I think he's the kind of guy that would shoot up draft boards if there was a combine for the NBA. Fortunately, there isn't.

Arizona is also not overly physical.

UCLA is OVERLY physical and it's disgusting that the officials let them get away with it.

I know I'm expected to pick obcure prospects every round, but you have to adjust to the times! All the top prospects are going (by my estimation) way too early this year. I'd rather build a deep, competent team of major leaguers that can kick everyone's ass this year, rather than roll the dice on prospects that may or may not succeed in the majors and may or may not have any significant playing time this year. Most prospects are a little too risky for my taste before the 10th round and I doubt most of them will be good keepers next year, so I've been largely shying away. Cueto was an exception.

9:41 AM, March 14, 2008

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jason! You just summed up how I feel as good as I could have. These guys going in the 6-7-8th rounds I saw as 16th-17th-18th round picks. Go ahead and take the prospects, who then will have higher keeper point values and may not even be worth keeping. In the meantime, I will fill my roster with productive major league players

The pool of marginally hopeful prospects has also dwindled considerably. I'd take prospects if appropriate, but I generally think the major leaguers like Bautista and Keppinger provide more value at this season, especially given the risk of prospects not being viable as keepers drafted in these rounds.

Nice pick Evan, I was struggling with Keppinger v. Bautista (both of whom I have in Zack's league). I like that both have multi-position eligibility! Took Bautista cause I knew he was a starter. Keppinger is a great pick for you since you also took Alex Gonzalez.

I like the deep leagues - it gives value to guys like Keppinger. You have to be a real baseball fan to play in them and you actually need to know pretty much every player in the league. Leagues where someone like Delgado or Adam LaRoche is a borderline CI aren't a lot of fun to me.

3:05 PM, March 14, 2008

Blogger Unknown said...

I'm happy with the current status. I like deep leagues for the reasons Justin mentioned. But I also understand some managers not wanting it too deep where you have to start worrying about back-up catchers, utility infielders who only get 150 at-bats, 5th outfielders, and the 12th pitcher on the roster.

I suggested an NFL type rule ... if you don't pick in your allotted time, then the next person can get their pick in, and the next, and so forth ... and the skipped person can pick whenever they get around to it. Jason didn't like the idea.

5:08 PM, March 16, 2008

Blogger Jody said...

How about they forfeit the pick and then a waiver list will determine which of the other managers will assume that pick. For repeat offenders, they will have the option of claiming the offending manager's previous round's pick or using the current pick. Either way, the offending manager, loses the pick, because the waiver owner would then select a person from their team to give to the offending owner's team, regardless of where the waiver owner had selected said player.

Just kidding, thought I would throw out conversation fodder...

7:13 PM, March 16, 2008

Blogger ET said...

Does anyone remember the NFL draft a few years back (when Byron Leftwich was coming out) when a team let their time expire and a couple teams picked while they (I think it was the Vikings) were getting their act together? It might motivate certain owners to make lists and it would create runs of picks for the managers after so they could move up a pick or two. Maybe next year? Or, the year after if this draft end up being for the 2009 season.

8:09 PM, March 16, 2008

Or, Jason could increase the number of keepers that we can keep ... that would cut down on the number of people that would need to be drafted.

I think this idea is better than a Vikings-esque forfeiture of draft pick position:

Find some random, but reasonably decent mock draft. If a pick isn't made within X amount of time (with a fair overnight cut-off), the next available person on the mock draft gets entered for that person. The manager(s) might not get exactly who he/she/they want, but will get someone of an approximate value for that draft position.

It seems a fair compromise for those who don't leave lists.

Tom's idea is very reasonable ... that's how it works in my other league. If you don't pick within two hours (during the specified time period during the day), you get the next available guy based on the cbssportsline ranks. Not as exciting as my scenario, but, reasonable.
