PS - another option, if we don't want to worry about emailing selected upcoming managers after every pick... sign in with Google/Blogger (can create a free profile) and check the box that says "Email follow-up comments" on the Draft posting. That means we'd all get emails each time... but as Jody so astutely mentioned, we have delete buttons.
Wouldn't hold your breath. I know Bish had some out-of-town interview and I don't know when he was getting back. I'll call him tomorrow if he hasn't made a pick. I don't think he realized or anticipated that the expansion draft would last quite as long as it did. He was considerate and left a list for the expansion draft, but I didn't even ask him for a list for the regular draft.
Who picks Teixeira over Utley? Does Bish have two X's in his middle name? While it's not in the same stratosphere as picking Tony Clark (who was coming off a banner year), I just don't get it. Oh ... I just checked the keeper board ... going for need in the first round of the draft? I am curious!
I'd take Utley over Teixeira, but Teixeira was pretty impressive after coming to the Braves. Plus he's in a contract year, which helps unless you are an unnamed former Braves CF.
Bish grew up in Arkansas, went to Rice (with me, Peter, and Lynlee), and roots for the Reds (family in Cinci). So I don't think he has any particular affinity for the Yellow Jackets, the Braves, or Teixeira.
That said, when we were at Rice, Georgia Tech came to town when Teixeira was there (Tech was ranked #1, Rice #2). I believe I went to the game with Peter (this is after I "retired"). In his first at-bat, Teixeira homered off our ace (and the #11 overall pick in 2001, Kenny Baugh). Baugh struck him out his next 2 at-bats. Rice came from behind with 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win 3-2, which moved them to #1 overall for the first time in school history in any sport. It was the most exciting baseball game I've ever seen live, the place went absolutely crazy when the winning run scored on a double to right-center.
I just don't like him. He threw a hissy-fit when his teams talked about moving him from 2nd to OF, even though he was a bad defensive 2nd baseman. It struck me as very selfish and detrimental to his team. He finally moved when the Nationals said they would put him on the restricted list (i.e. unpaid) or sit him on the bench until he was ready to go to the outfield. He changed his tune pretty quick, but he should have done what was best for the team, particularly because it was pretty apparent that he was a bad defensive 2nd baseman and showed no signs of improving over like 4 seasons.
Oops, forgot about the finger. Seems like it wasn't supposed to keep him out too long though. I'm more worried about his hammy letting him steal 30 bases...
I was somewhat surprised to see Haren go in the 1st. I learned my lesson about taking SPs in the first a couple of seasons ago... though I would have jumped on peavy if he would have been around at 13/14.
Generally I agree about taking pitchers in the 1st round. But an NL-only keeper league definitely thins the talent to the point where a few pitchers should be taken (especially in a 13 team league). Santana is definitely a top 3 pick to me, considering the keepers and I think #1 is perfectly justifiable (especially since Avi already had a #1 quality hitter in Wright). I would have taken Peavy before Haren, but I think taking him toward the end of the 1st round is also justifiable.
I agree. Virtually no pitcher is a five category contributor and can wait past the first round. That seems a sound theory and explains why I took the speedster Lance Berkman in the first round.
And one reason to draft a top notch starter is because you only have 5 SP's ... so one counts for a higher percentage of the contribution (RP's don't get as many innings). So, whereas you have 10 people contributing to runs, rbis, avg. etc., you only have 5-6 contributions to K's, WHIP, ERA, and W. Not sure why I'm posting it ... maybe in defense of the owners who picked SP's ... although I thought Haren over Peavy was odd. Maybe I just don't know enough about Haren.
Four of the top 5 SB guys in the NL last year with 20+ HR's were keepers: H. Ramirez, E. Byrnes, D. Wright and B. Phillips.
The other, Rollins, was off the board with pick #3. Keepers Chris Young and Corey Hart were 20-20 last year. I'm not sure if I should say how many (if any) 20-20 guys remain, but the number is not staggering.
Russell Martin and Ryan Braun were reasonably close and - surprise - they were keepers too.
Peter is very good about leaving lists. But its entirely possible that he hasn't checked his email since the draft started (i.e. since the expansion draft ended). Also, its harder for him to send me a list before I've drafted in that round (though he could always send his list to Lynlee since she is on the opposite side of the draft from him).
And those kind of records are exactly why I firmly believe these things are terribly over-thought. Yet somehow it's much easier to obsess over picks than my giant grant application due in a month...
I'm probably not the best person to list-watch. I will be away this weekend and can check in often enough to make my own picks but shouldn't be counted on to watch over someone else's. Beyond that, I'm coming under some major deadlines with rapid speed and don't need more excuses to procrastinate!
Did anyone else see on ESPN last night when they were talking about the Vandy game? The anchor said it was tied 30-30 at halftime, 73-73 at the end of regulation and Vanderbilt won 86-85 by outscoring their opponent (Miss St. I think) 12-11 in the extra 5 minutes.
I'm not sure where all this ill will stems from ... perhaps it's due to the fact that I'll actually say what the rest of you are thinking when someone says something ridiculous. That's fine.
No ill will. But what I do think is ridiculous is Adam LaRoche in the 3rd round...even with a ton of players off the board as keepers. I had him last year and he was so terrible for half of the year that I chose NOT to keep him with a 12th rounder. Enjoy his pop ups and strike-outs!
According to fantasysportscentral, LaRoche was the 6th best hitter left on the board (which is similar to other rankings), so ... it is what it is (courtesy of Mr. McNamee).
Hmmm, apparently someone has decided to plagiarize my name and select Pat Burrell in a slot that isnt even mine. Curious. Maybe I will have to use my own last name from now on!
Bastard? Me? ET, why don't you just go eat some Reese's and touch yourself with a glowing finger (I'll bet you've never heard these types of jokes, eh? It took restraint to avoid the obvious "phone home" joke, but there it is).
Have you forgotten the typo that was the name of our league for the first year?
Ah, Evan and Tom. Battle Royale of witty sarcasm makes it feel like a Monday instead of Friday! Why so cranky, you guys have to work this weekend or something?
Yeah, Joe needs to learn about the whole "email Jason a list if you are going to be away from the computer" phenomenon. Earlier this week he said something about studying for a test, so maybe he had a test today?
Or maybe he just doesn't like to make his pick until at least 5 people have complained about his timeliness and Evan is all good and cranky?
Why is Lynlee going to Vegas anyway? I hear there is a huge Fantasy Baseball Draft party at the Vegas ESPN Zone tonight. We all know she's just going for that...to try and get an unfair advantage over the rest of us. Not fair. Not fair at all.
Haven't we already learned the Tom and Evan are both always cranky? This should not be a new revelation.
I'm a poor speller and Yahoo! doesn't spell check fantasy league names. I accept full responsibility. And I still wouldn't necessarily know the correct spelling if forced to choose. I miss having Ben in the league, he's a terrible speller/typist. Steve would be another guy that would make me look like a better speller, but he keeps rejecting my invitations to join.
Funny Roy, but we know its really a problem if I'm a father again before the draft is complete. And its an utter (udder?) disaster if Bish is married before the draft is complete.
This is almost getting silly. Heck, two years ago (in my previous career) when I was working 18 hour days without compu ter access, I was able to stay in the loop and made my picks via text messages.
Who is this Joe guy anyway? First he tries to draft David Wright (ironically, just hours after Jason sent out an Email saying "Don't try to draft David Wright, he was kept.") and now incurs the wrath of the entire league by being silent for over 12 hours. An inauspicious start.
I hate to say it, but Michael is ri...ri...right (wow, that was hard). There were a number of times that he and I had the other person text in a pick. Maybe certain people would benefit from such an arrangement?
Is anybody here on a text free diet during the day?
Maybe we should all trade cell numbers with one or two people with whom we are each comfortable. If there is a significant delay, a friendly "hey, asshole..." might speed things up.
This is Jason, but to make things more confusing I've decided to start going by my middle name for the rest of the draft.
As a side note, some say that your "porn name" is your middle name, followed by the name of the street you live on. At one point, my porn name was Michael Troy, which I always thought was a very good porn name. So what is your porn name? I'm Michael Memphis right now, which isn't nearly as exciting for the ladies.
Anyway, Joe is a med student. So like Peter and Bish, he sometimes needs to be cut some slack. I think he'll be good about leaving a list once the draft falls into more of a rhythm. If not, I'll make Jody throw batting practice to him, and then make him throw batting practice to Jody. Trust me when I say that Jody can hurt you both ways!
Hey, I'm a law student and I manage to make selections on here. Even with finals coming up and the added stress of struggling to find enough athletic people in this shitty school to form an intramural softball team.
I have a list from Lynlee, but she asked me to wait for 1 hour in case she is able to make the pick herself. So if Lynlee hasn't picked by 3:15 CST (1:15 PST), I will make the pick for her.
Bish's 1st name is Michael. He is co-managing the team with his fiance Natalie. I call him Bish. She calls him Michael. My guess is that Natalie posted the Burrell pick, but instead of using her name, she used Bish's "real" name instead of his nickname.
Hence, the slightly confusing appearance that "Michael" made two picks very close together.
Unless we hear otherwise, the Burrell pick is fine.
I was scared away from Delgado by his injury history. Is he really only 35? What are the chances he plays all year? I read an article that had the Mets rumored to be going after Konerko to replace him (although it was totally speculative). I probably reached a bit for need. I also considered Tejada, but was scared off by his legal concerns and the fact that his production has seriously declined in recent years. LaRoche should still be on the upswing (or uppercut!). I think he was hurt last year by the media barrage in his first season in a new locale ... I think he'll be a little more comfortable dealing with the pressures of Pittsburgh this summer. Plus, Roy will be there to root him on down the stretch! I also thought about Bay, but went for need as I kept 3 OF's ... even if none of them are any good. So ... now you know why I made the crappy LaRoche pick. There was a pretty big drop-off from the start of the 2nd (with Ramirez and Co.) to the end (Glaus could be a bust for Roy, too, if he get hurt ... doesn't he always?).
My fingers were bleeding by the time I finished typing his name, and the pain was quite excruciating. I took solice in the knowledge that Joe was up next, so I knew I had plenty of time to heal before having to pick another distasteful player.
Lynlee, I'm not knocking the pick. I just hate Juan Pierre. Or at least any manager who has ever hit him 1st or 2nd in a lineup. I don't care how fast he is or that he hits around .300. No player with an OBP below .340 who regularly leads the league in outs should be hitting leadoff (or 2nd).
And the Pierre pick is doubly great since its looking like he won't even be starting this year. Are we that late in the draft already...where we are drafting non-starters?
I think Torre is planning on starting him, and just giving his younger competition some time in left and right. So while Pierre's playing time does have some risk, the Dodgers don't seem likely to make the right decision (for real life purposes) and sit him on the bench. Fantasy owners everywhere rejoice, while sabermaticians cry.
No, the RIGHT decision would have been NOT to give him $45million last winter. That would have been the right decision. All of this is now sunk cost. Damnit.
Yeah, the 2006-07 offseason was pretty bad for the Dodgers. Saddled themselves with Pierre, an injury-plagued infielder, and an injury-plagued pitcher. All of whom potentially block better and cheaper players! What's the point in having one of the best farm systems in baseball if you continually block young talent by overpaying overrated veterans?
Yeah Kemp/(Player name) will play right, Jones in center, and (Player name)/Pierre in left.
I don't get it there. (Player name) is ready to get the everyday shot and is an outstanding defensive CF (much better than Jones at this stage), and (Player name) needs a shot, too. But instead, we throw $80 million at Pierre and Jones. And this is after already letting (player name) go who had a great year with another team last year.
Sorry about the blanks...these cats haven't been drafted yet.
I deleted a couple comments related to Bish picking Loney ... one asking if I could go ahead and make my pick and the other asking "If you're going to take a keeper, why not Ramirez?" I did so because Bish quickly rectified the situation. So, little harm was done. If he had picked Loney and disappeared for 10 hours then I wouldn't have been so forgiving. So, that is the reason for two of the deleted comments.
Yeah, Ramirez woulda been a good choice. I'll be sure to pick him next. Actually, I would have picked Brett Favre, but there was that whole retirement thing... :)
I'm pathetic. Actually, I fell asleep with my son after a rousing game of Ratatouille on his VSmile. Now I'm turning my computer off. Happy drafting Zack.
oh how i long for the days of getting 2+ rounds done in a day. weekends used to be good for at least a dozen picks, alas. guess i should not bitch too mightily at this point, b/c i will be responsible for massive delays in the later rounds.
I seriously thought about Encarnacion and almost took him. Don't know why I took Hermida over him. They are pretty close, but I think Hermida has a little higher ceiling. Encarnacion has had fewer health problems and more total success, so we'll see.
Yeah, it is definitely a little more difficult than the first draft in this league. I looked at Khalil Greene last time through ... he's great if he's giving you 27 HR's, but if he's down around 15 (where he sat the previous 3 years), why bother? Actually, it seems a lot more sparse this year than last, as far as available talent ... maybe it's just me.
Jason - you seem to be pretty high on Hermida ... you've grabbed him before (have you had him all 3 years now?) - I think.
Maybe this is out of bounds, but the Cain pick got me thinking: what's the over/under line for runs for the Giants this year? 300? 400? (yeah, I'm exaggerating a tiny bit)
I think it will be an interesting race between the Giants (683 last year) and Nationals (673 last year), although I think Lastings Milledge is poised for a breakout .300, 30, 30, 100, 100 season.
Without looking, who was third in the NL in runs scored last year (behind the Phillies and the Rockies)?
Ironically, last year I was much higher on Hermida, just because he was a bit of a sleeper. I wouldn't say he was a guy I was targeting, but when I sat down and looked at his stats after the all-star break last year, I was pretty impressed. Probably can't quite do it over a full season, but I figured it was worth the risk.
greene was a bit of a stretch, but looking at the SS gaps in rosters and the players beyond him, i had to go for quality in that slot.
conor and edwin flying off caught me by surprise. i was hoping for one of them. durnit.
fukodome was a mystery to me until i watched the cubs game (kudos to WGN for finally pulling their heads out of their asses), where he did the swishy-smooth ichiro float out of the box as he swings. im not sure why, but that makes me think he is a good hitter. im hoping with a hee sop choi that works plus steals.
talent does seem to be thinning at a much quicker pace than years past. at this rate, we should have a few part-timers in active lineups, which is always good to me.
Yes, that pick was from Evan's list that he sent to me and Roy.
(Roy (or anyone else), am I correct that "me and Roy" is correct instead of "Roy and I"? I seem to remember Roy correcting me about this usage in high school and want to make sure proper grammar has stuck with me...)
Yes, sorry. I meant to indicate that I was posting the pick on Evan's behalf, but I forgot in the process of checking the spelling of Kouzmanoff.
Jason, it is generally accepted among prescriptive grammarians that in the object position, "me" is correct. Etiquette might advise you to write "Roy and me" rather than "me and Roy", but "I" would not be appropriate, according to them. Among descriptive linguists, on the other hand, the case (and Case) is acknowledged less certain.
In years past I sided with the prescriptivists. These days, I'm inclined to live and let live.
I actually talked to Joe twice today, so I imagine he'll pick at some point. The first time he was just finishing up a round of golf.
Joe, if you won't be around to make you pick in the next round, please send me a short list with a few players so I can make your next pick in a more expeditious manner.
Avi, feel free to do the same if you see this before going to bed (its already 10:30 in Miami, so perhaps its too late?).
Finally! I have some time to get into this message board. So to catch up: 1) Rice no longer looks good (can't win by giving up 10+ runs a game). 2) Sorry for my late first pick - I didn't know the draft had started until getting home post call. 3) This is going to be a friggin crazy draft - absolutely no depth. 4) I do remember that Texeria game - one of the best college games I have ever been to.
One more thing. Everyone here follows a lot of baseball. Has anyone every seen a switch pitcher. In the Rice game today, Creighton had a guy that threw both left and right. He had a glove that could be used on either hand. Crazy!
No ... but I've heard rumors of them. I'm sure Bobby Cox is already salivating at the idea. Or, perhaps opponents of the Braves are excited about the idea of Bobby Cox not playing the right-lefty and lefty-righty matchups all the damn time!
I actually heard rumors about a kid (maybe in HS in Kansas) who would pitch the first game of a double header one way and then do the second game with the other arm. I'm not sure I'd want him hitting at the end of the second game, but oh well.
I remember reading a long time ago about an old school pitcher in the majors that did it. The only thing that stuck in my mind was that there is a MLB rule that you can't pitch from both sides in the same AB.
He appears to be a lefty. His pitches have some natural sink to them. He has a nice, effortless arm action. Still, he's a fairly raw prospect and, like Deolis Guerra, is mostly projection at this point.
Good lord, I dont check this thing for a few hours Sunday night and theres like 30 posts I need to catch up on upon getting in to work (a little late thanks to daylight saving time) this morning. Such a talkative group, we have.
Last year this board had 421 posts over a month and a half... We currently have over 150 in 5 days.
We still have people that don't realize that now that they've joined our league that they have also entwined their lives w/ ours.
For the experienced members of this league, when our significant other notices us fuming for no reason, we can just point to a name on the list of members in the league and they'll understand...
On the plus side, by the time we pick those 23rd round prospects, most of them will be in either the Hall of Fame or the government cheese line, taking out the speculation as to their actual value.
Yeah, I didn't sign up for this whole entwinement bit. Jason fooled me again! But I did find myself debating the merits of adding other managers to my GChat list this morning... a dangerous proposition indeed.
I'm trying to figure out what round will officially announce the desperation of most owners when we'll obviously know they're reaching.
With 9 position players, 5 SPs, 2 RPs, 1 CI, and 2 Ps, that amounts to 247 players.
Looking at existing rosters gives us 400 available players, 128 available starting position players and 64 starting pitchers, 16 closers (yeah, whatever)...really, most teams' #5 starter at the end of the year will be in the minors all year. That gives us 208 players w/ the potential for greatest contribution.
Based on this, we see that, statistically speaking, we should start reaching after Avi's last pick of the 16th round.
In reality, I think the reaching will start while the draft round is still in the single-digits if it hasn't started already.
ok, i understand not wanting to turn in a list. sometimes, especially if you give a list to an owner close to you in draft order, you may be revealing your hand and prompt a snipe or two. but i feel if you dont want to submit a list, you should have some way to check the draft every four hours or so, before/after work, in/out of bed, etc.
i complain only b/c i know things will slow greatly for a couple of us in about 10 days, which we disclosed ahead of time, and i want to finish before the season starts.
Avi needs to look @ how he's managing his time. If class is taking up so much of his time, then I think he needs to multitask by sleeping in class or while studying.
Well, seeing as how we have 4 rounds worth of late keepers who come out of that pool, that moves reaches up to the 13th round (kind of scary). And, if you factor in uncertainty (anyone looked at the team across the bay from Oakland lately?) and inevitable platoon situations ... well ... it's a little depressing. And, shouldn't the draft be slowing down at that point, as it becomes harder to find contributors ... that's even more depressing. On the bright side, at least there will be a lot of picks skipped due to all the keepers.
FYI, Avi sent me 2 names and asked me to post his picks, but one of them (Kelly Johnson) was a keeper. I emailed him back, but he hasn't responded yet. Hopefully he is still on the internets and can either post his picks or get back to me fairly quickly.
Oh yeah, and unless Avi takes the guy Joe wants, I will be able to post a pick for Lynlee, Joe, and Bish, so things should start flying along fairly quickly.
Your esteemed President W referred to the internet as "the internets" in one of his 2004 debates with John Kerry. So my use of "internets" is a Bushism. Kind of like strategery, only it actually happend.
In other news, Jenn continues to practice her love every day.
It was another Bushism. Speaking in favor of a medical malpratice cap, he said something to the effect of "so OBGYNs can practice their love". He obviously meant "so OBGYNs can practice WHAT they love", but its still funny as hell when you consider what OBGYNs do.
And to answer your question before you ask it - No, I have no idea why Joe feels its necessary to have 4 closers in a 13 team NL-only league. He now has 25% of the league's closers and only roster space to play 3 of the 4.
I didn't really like picking Hoffman where I did, but I suspected a bunch of closers were about to come off the board and he is pretty reliable (at least until September).
Hoffman is dogshit. He is down to an 85mph fastball and 75mph changeup. I saw him get shelled a half a dozen times last year. Thats why I took Wagner where I did...reliable piching seems hard to come by in this league!
Yeah, I thought of C Cordero over Hoffman, but the Padres are a better team and he always seems to save 40 games, despite the occasional shelling. Hopefully he holds on another year.
I thought his fastball has been down to 85 mph for like 4 years?
As long as you have a job as a closer, and you play for a team that wins games, you will pick up saves. Hoffman has enough inertia to keep his job until he starts blowing half his chances, and that's probably pretty hard to do in the NL, even at 85 mph. Except against the Rockies, maybe.
Yeah he has been below 90 for many years now...the difference last year is that he was hardly throwing any fastballs at all. Probably 75% of his pitches are change ups. And it seems to me that if you're not changing up from anything, its not as great of a weapon. NL batters seem to agree. That being said, he probably will still have 35 saves and an ERA around 3...if the Padres can manage to put any runs on the board...and lets hope that they can't.
Looking at Avi's last two picks...its good to know that he is taking young players and looking to plan for the future. Those last two picks should be assets for his team for many years to come.
I was a little disappointed that we had to wait 12 hours for the Wily Mo selection. Especially when we could have just given him Neifi Perez and called it even.
Jeez, the disgruntled Dodgers fans are out in force today. Michael, its OK for someone to draft a closer that has shut your beloved Dodgers down year after year. Justin, it is OK for someone to draft a closer who blew his arm out after signing a fat contract for your beloved Dodgers.
Not our fault your team is continually run by a (revolving) moron. Your scouting directors are always good though!
The Kemp/Billingsley duo will return the Dodgers to greatness (much as they carried The Cellar '07 squad to what was undoubtedly the single greatest season that this league has ever seen).
And don't forget the Martin/Loney combo which are sure to lead the Dodgers to the pennant, and the Canseco Pool Party team to the Bagel's Playground championship!
Well, I definitely have never agonized this much about a 5th round pick before. This is gonna get really freakin interesting once we hit the 15th, 16th, etc round.
Sorry, I meant beast. I've got the likelihood of him figuring it out this year at about the same as me being Dr. Tromble this time next year. And, I think next March I'll still be going by Evan.
Wow on the Maybin pick. Passing up quite a few guys who are all but guaranteed 15-25 HR for a prospect with no guarantees of breaking camp with the big club. Who knows, maybe he has an out-of-the-blue rookie season like Hanley Ramirez?!
No rubbing here. I was on the road when I got the word for me to pick. When I got home, I was Mr. Mom while the missus was out.
With the Maybin pick, I think we can see what round the reaching has begun...not for talent, but for getting him before anyone else grabs him.
Actually, I was trying to figure out another Marlin to pick to the the "turkey" of Marlins, but I had to say no to the "player to be named".
I say we allow the drafting of currently underage offspring of current ML players' in Rounds 20 and up.
All current owners are allowed to select all of their own children w/ their 26th pick, even if they have a keeper in that round. Call it our supplemental draft.
Justin, good luck with Lidge. I might have won both this league and Zack's league last year if it wasn't for that bum.
Well, that might be overstating the case against Lidge (especially in this league where I also made an early, inspired Morgan Ensberg pick). But he certainly hurt both my teams when he was drafted as my sole closer.
I think the notion that you would've won Zack's league if it weren't for Lidge is a bit far-fetched. That's like saying you would've won if Yahoo would have counted the Padres-Rockies one-game playoff. Absurd, I say.
Wow, I totally forgot about the whole Rockies/Padres thing. Didn't I really calculate it out that I would have won (or at least might have won) if they had counted the game? I think there was some uncertainty due to Yahoo! rounding WHIP and ERA, rather than telling us exactly how many earned runs and baserunners our pitchers allowed. Still, that was pretty sweet.

My favorite pick in the history of this league:
"1.9 Ichiro"
Thanks Joel...

Oh no ... a run on the Mets!
2:35 PM, March 05, 2008
What do you think of Rice after their sweep at OJ Park?
6:14 PM, March 05, 2008
PS - another option, if we don't want to worry about emailing selected upcoming managers after every pick... sign in with Google/Blogger (can create a free profile) and check the box that says "Email follow-up comments" on the Draft posting. That means we'd all get emails each time... but as Jody so astutely mentioned, we have delete buttons.
6:16 PM, March 05, 2008
What's crazy about Joel's pick is that that's the first AL player that he wanted...
6:43 PM, March 05, 2008
Yeah, he could have had Adrian Beltre or Richie Sexson!
6:55 PM, March 05, 2008
Is pick #4 going to happen tonight?
8:01 PM, March 05, 2008
Wouldn't hold your breath. I know Bish had some out-of-town interview and I don't know when he was getting back. I'll call him tomorrow if he hasn't made a pick. I saw we give him A-Rod and move on.

I hate Soriano. Was it too much to ask to let Utley fall to me?
8:48 AM, March 06, 2008
Who picks Teixeira over Utley? Does Bish have two X's in his middle name? While it's not in the same stratosphere as picking Tony Clark (who was coming off a banner year), I just don't get it. Oh ... I just checked the keeper board ... going for need in the first round of the draft? I am curious!

Once again we get to deal w/ comments from multiple time zones. Looks like they're being posted using a Pacific timestamp.

I'd take Utley over Teixeira, but Teixeira was pretty impressive after coming to the Braves. Plus he's in a contract year, which helps unless you are an unnamed former Braves CF.
9:26 AM, March 06, 2008
I thought they already gave him a deal. I was also thinking Bish might be a Yellow Jacket.

Good times.
9:40 AM, March 06, 2008
What's so bad about Soriano?
9:43 AM, March 06, 2008
I just don't like him. He threw a hissy-fit when his teams talked about moving him from 2nd to OF, even though he was a bad defensive 2nd baseman. It struck me as very selfish and detrimental to his team. He finally moved when the Nationals said they would put him on the restricted list (i.e. unpaid) or sit him on the bench until he was ready to go to the outfield. He changed his tune pretty quick, but he should have done what was best for the team, particularly because it was pretty apparent that he was a bad defensive 2nd baseman and showed no signs of improving over like 4 seasons.
9:46 AM, March 06, 2008
Aside from the broken finger and the lack of 2B eligibility these days.
9:47 AM, March 06, 2008
Oops, forgot about the finger. Seems like it wasn't supposed to keep him out too long though. I'm more worried about his hammy letting him steal 30 bases...
9:48 AM, March 06, 2008
I'm amazed Peavy lasted that long. I would have taken him in a heartbeat if I hadn't kept 3 starting pitchers.
9:50 AM, March 06, 2008
I was hoping peavy would slide to me, that would have wrapped up my SP.
9:54 AM, March 06, 2008
3 SPs in the first round? I've clearly got to get used to this NL-only / keeper business...
9:58 AM, March 06, 2008
I was somewhat surprised to see Haren go in the 1st. I learned my lesson about taking SPs in the first a couple of seasons ago... though I would have jumped on peavy if he would have been around at 13/14.
Things are looking thin on the swing...
10:01 AM, March 06, 2008
Generally I agree about taking pitchers in the 1st round. But an NL-only keeper league definitely thins the talent to the point where a few pitchers should be taken (especially in a 13 team league). Santana is definitely a top 3 pick to me, considering the keepers and I think #1 is perfectly justifiable (especially since Avi already had a #1 quality hitter in Wright). I would have taken Peavy before Haren, but I think taking him toward the end of the 1st round is also justifiable.
10:20 AM, March 06, 2008
peavy dropping into my lap was a gift. dunno if i would have done haren in the first round either, but thank you jody.
any chance of getting lists from peter this year?
10:22 AM, March 06, 2008
I don't pick pitchers in the first round by policy, because pitching performance, especially ERA, is far less predictable than hitting.
But, then, my pitching staff always sucks, so don't listen to me.
10:29 AM, March 06, 2008
I agree. Virtually no pitcher is a five category contributor and can wait past the first round. That seems a sound theory and explains why I took the speedster Lance Berkman in the first round.
10:44 AM, March 06, 2008
How many people contribute heavily to HR's, SB's and RBI's?
10:52 AM, March 06, 2008
Only a few and that's why they should be in the first round over pitchers that don't/can't produce for all 5 categories.
10:53 AM, March 06, 2008
And one reason to draft a top notch starter is because you only have 5 SP's ... so one counts for a higher percentage of the contribution (RP's don't get as many innings). So, whereas you have 10 people contributing to runs, rbis, avg. etc., you only have 5-6 contributions to K's, WHIP, ERA, and W. Not sure why I'm posting it ... maybe in defense of the owners who picked SP's ... although I thought Haren over Peavy was odd. Maybe I just don't know enough about Haren.
11:01 AM, March 06, 2008
Aren't they all gone? I haven't really looked, but 30-30 guys don't grow on trees! I think they live in the AL!
11:02 AM, March 06, 2008
Hurry, someone snatch up Ron Gant and Jose Canseco!
11:02 AM, March 06, 2008
In defense of absolutely nobody, my draft strategies have resulted in my finishing an average of 7th place over the first two years of this league.
11:05 AM, March 06, 2008
Four of the top 5 SB guys in the NL last year with 20+ HR's were keepers:
H. Ramirez,
E. Byrnes,
D. Wright
and B.
11:09 AM, March 06, 2008
Peter is very good about leaving lists. But its entirely possible that he hasn't checked his email since the draft started (i.e. since the expansion draft ended). Also, its harder for him to send me a list before I've drafted in that round (though he could always send his list to Lynlee since she is on the opposite side of the draft from him).
11:10 AM, March 06, 2008
And those kind of records are exactly why I firmly believe these things are terribly over-thought. Yet somehow it's much easier to obsess over picks than my giant grant application due in a month...
11:16 AM, March 06, 2008
I'm probably not the best person to list-watch. I will be away this weekend and can check in often enough to make my own picks but shouldn't be counted on to watch over someone else's. Beyond that, I'm coming under some major deadlines with rapid speed and don't need more excuses to procrastinate!
12:11 PM, March 06, 2008
Just like that, he's gone! (Beltran)
12:18 PM, March 06, 2008
I would have snatched him, but I also have some serious concerns about his knees this year. He might not run as much.
Instead I get two 3Bs, it looks like after the next pick or two there is a huge drop off in quality...
12:23 PM, March 06, 2008
Justin wins my "bastard of the day award." Not that I needed another 3b, but I was eyeing one of them as a 4 category power source.
12:27 PM, March 06, 2008
Is Derrek Lee still available?
12:57 PM, March 06, 2008
Who does Derreck play for, anyway? I'm sure he could have been drafted rounds from now!
12:58 PM, March 06, 2008
If Justin gets "Bastard of the Day," can Evan be nominated for the "Bastard of the League" award?
1:21 PM, March 06, 2008
It's good to see I'm fooling the newcomers.
1:24 PM, March 06, 2008
I don't know Lynlee, but you never have to worry about any "bastard" awards. You have a potential category of awards all to yourself!
1:33 PM, March 06, 2008
Did anyone else see on ESPN last night when they were talking about the Vandy game? The anchor said it was tied 30-30 at halftime, 73-73 at the end of regulation and Vanderbilt won 86-85 by outscoring their opponent (Miss St. I think) 12-11 in the extra 5 minutes.
Wow.
1:38 PM, March 06, 2008
Oh clearly. I wouldn't throw stones if I didn't expect to be a category unto myself ;)
1:48 PM, March 06, 2008
Perhaps Jason can explain it using his 0 = 1 argument.
1:53 PM, March 06, 2008
And the last ace pitcher goes off the board. Thanks, Jason.
Kudos to Lynlee for the shot at Evan...I know a few had been thinking it.
2:52 PM, March 06, 2008
I'm not sure where all this ill will stems from ... perhaps it's due to the fact that I'll actually say what the rest of you are thinking when someone says something ridiculous. That's fine.
3:30 PM, March 06, 2008
No ill will. But what I do think is ridiculous is Adam LaRoche in the 3rd round...even with a ton of players off the board as keepers. I had him last year and he was so terrible for half of the year that I chose NOT to keep him with a 12th rounder. Enjoy his pop ups and strike-outs!
4:49 PM, March 06, 2008
so then how ridiculous is a second round adam laroche?
5:13 PM, March 06, 2008
I was thinking the same thing to myself when I made the pick.
6:57 PM, March 06, 2008
According to fantasysportscentral, LaRoche was the 6th best hitter left on the board (which is similar to other rankings), so ... it is what it is (courtesy of Mr. McNamee).
7:00 PM, March 06, 2008
Plus, I think that bring the LaRoche boys together will help both of them thrive this season.
7:18 PM, March 06, 2008
do peter and bish work together?
7:58 PM, March 06, 2008
No. Bish works in Kansas City, Peter in Houston.
8:34 PM, March 06, 2008
Hmmm, apparently someone has decided to plagiarize my name and select Pat Burrell in a slot that isnt even mine. Curious. Maybe I will have to use my own last name from now on!
8:06 AM, March 07, 2008
MP, is "plagiarize" the same as "plagarize"? You might confuse some people around here.
8:51 AM, March 07, 2008
Watch out Tom, you might be labeled "Bastard of the Day/Week/Month/League" if you aren't careful.
8:54 AM, March 07, 2008
Tom wrapped up Bastard of the Decade back in law school, so his award is already taken care of.
8:59 AM, March 07, 2008
"Plagiarize" is the correct spelling.
9:00 AM, March 07, 2008
Hopefully, he wasn't the Law School spelling bee champion.
9:00 AM, March 07, 2008
Bastard? Me? ET, why don't you just go eat some Reese's and touch yourself with a glowing finger (I'll bet you've never heard these types of jokes, eh? It took restraint to avoid the obvious "phone home" joke, but there it is).
Have you forgotten the typo that was the name of our league for the first year?
9:09 AM, March 07, 2008
Ah, Evan and Tom. Battle Royale of witty sarcasm makes it feel like a Monday instead of Friday! Why so cranky, you guys have to work this weekend or something?
9:13 AM, March 07, 2008
8 hours of seminar on Saturday and Sunday. How'd you know?
9:14 AM, March 07, 2008
I will throw my support fully behind anyone with gall enough to be wittily cranky every day of the week!
So where's this Joe character? I have a blackjack table to get to.
9:23 AM, March 07, 2008
I wasn't throwing out any nominations, just trying to keep you off the block. So, it's Jason that can't spell.
I was excited to make my third round pick when I got up ... perhaps I should check back Tuesday and give my selection.
9:25 AM, March 07, 2008
Yeah, Joe needs to learn about the whole "email Jason a list if you are going to be away from the computer" phenomenon. Earlier this week he said something about studying for a test, so maybe he had a test today?
Or maybe he just doesn't like to make his pick until at least 5 people have complained about his timeliness and Evan is all good and cranky?
9:37 AM, March 07, 2008
Make a pick already! I'll be a dad before the 4th round is over!
9:39 AM, March 07, 2008
That's two, do I need to lean on 3 more?
9:41 AM, March 07, 2008
Why is Lynlee going to Vegas anyway? I hear there is a huge Fantasy Baseball Draft party at the Vegas ESPN Zone tonight. We all know she's just going for that...to try and get an unfair advantage over the rest of us. Not fair. Not fair at all.
Haven't we already learned the Tom and Evan are both always cranky? This should not be a new revelation.
9:45 AM, March 07, 2008
hate to be the fly in the ointment of the hour, but jeeeez. lists, lists, lists, lists!!!!
i always wondered if the misspelling of plagiarized was an inside rice/AK joke or something. i peg ted stevens as a horrible speller.
9:45 AM, March 07, 2008
I'm a poor speller and Yahoo! doesn't spell check fantasy league names. I accept full responsibility. And I still wouldn't necessarily know the correct spelling if forced to choose. I miss having Ben in the league, he's a terrible speller/typist. Steve would be another guy that would make me look like a better speller, but he keeps rejecting my invitations to join.
Funny Roy, but we know its really a problem if I'm a father again before the draft is complete. And its an utter (udder?) disaster if Bish is married before the draft is complete.
9:57 AM, March 07, 2008
Just give him Neifi Perez and let's move on....
10:03 AM, March 07, 2008
Would complaining about an udder disaster be the same as crying over spilled milk?
10:03 AM, March 07, 2008
This is almost getting silly. Heck, two years ago (in my previous career) when I was working 18 hour days without compu ter access, I was able to stay in the loop and made my picks via text messages.
Who is this Joe guy anyway? First he tries to draft David Wright (ironically, just hours after Jason sent out an Email saying "Don't try to draft David Wright, he was kept.") and now incurs the wrath of the entire league by being silent for over 12 hours. An inauspicious start.
11:14 AM, March 07, 2008
I hate to say it, but Michael is ri...ri...right (wow, that was hard). There were a number of times that he and I had the other person text in a pick. Maybe certain people would benefit from such an arrangement?
Is anybody here on a text free diet during the day?
Maybe we should all trade cell numbers with one or two people with whom we are each comfortable. If there is a significant delay, a friendly "hey, asshole..." might speed things up.
11:23 AM, March 07, 2008
11:27 AM, March 07, 2008
As a middle-name Michael guy myself, this is a good call. Michael Boardwalk Drive is a horrible, horrible name.
11:30 AM, March 07, 2008
Hey, I'm a law student and I manage to make selections on here. Even with finals coming up and the added stress of struggling to find enough athletic people in this shitty school to form an intramural softball team.
11:30 AM, March 07, 2008
Maybe Tom should go by his middle name, too...then we can have half the league being named Michael.
This was sent by Michael's porn name.
11:31 AM, March 07, 2008
I was the second michael
11:36 AM, March 07, 2008
Thanks, Michael, I think we figured that one out.
I think the best porn name ever goes to my old law school roommate. His porn name would have been Bart Bob-O-Link. We have a winner.
11:39 AM, March 07, 2008
I'm so confused. Now I don't even know who I am, let alone who these other people are.
11:52 AM, March 07, 2008
Jimmy Keystone says the LaRoche pick sucked.
11:59 AM, March 07, 2008
For he's a jolly good fellow!
I have a list from Lynlee, but she asked me to wait for 1 hour in case she is able to make the pick herself. So if Lynlee hasn't picked by 3:15 CST (1:15 PST), I will make the pick for her.
12:15 PM, March 07, 2008
i am so confused. is burrell a real pick? what is wrong with posting picks with your real name, or at least stating a proxy pick?
12:33 PM, March 07, 2008
Bish's 1st name is Michael. He is co-managing the team with his fiance Natalie. I call him Bish. She calls him Michael. My guess is that Natalie posted the Burrell pick, but instead of using her name, she used Bish's "real" name instead of his nickname.
Hence, the slightly confusing appearance that "Michael" made two picks very close together.
Unless we hear otherwise, the Burrell pick is fine.
12:48 PM, March 07, 2008
I am waiting an hour again, per Lynlee's instructions. However, her pick will be posted at 5:00 pm CST at the latest.
2:07 PM, March 07, 2008
Did you miss me?
2:34 PM, March 07, 2008
How much did it hurt you to write down Juan Pierre, even if it wasn't for your team?
2:35 PM, March 07, 2008
My fingers were bleeding by the time I finished typing his name, and the pain was quite excruciating. I took solice in the knowledge that Joe was up next, so I knew I had plenty of time to heal before having to pick another distasteful player.
Lynlee, I'm not knocking the pick. I just hate Juan Pierre. Or at least any manager who has ever hit him 1st or 2nd in a lineup. I don't care how fast he is or that he hits around .300. No player with an OBP below .340 who regularly leads the league in outs should be hitting leadoff (or 2nd).
2:47 PM, March 07, 2008
And the Pierre pick is doubly great since its looking like he won't even be starting this year. Are we that late in the draft already...where we are drafting non-starters?
2:51 PM, March 07, 2008
I think Torre is planning on starting him, and just giving his younger competition some time in left and right. So while Pierre's playing time does have some risk, the Dodgers don't seem likely to make the right decision (for real life purposes) and sit him on the bench. Fantasy owners everywhere rejoice, while sabermaticians cry.
2:55 PM, March 07, 2008
No, the RIGHT decision would have been NOT to give him $45million last winter. That would have been the right decision. All of this is now sunk cost. Damnit.
2:56 PM, March 07, 2008
Yeah, the 2006-07 offseason was pretty bad for the Dodgers. Saddled themselves with Pierre, an injury-plagued infielder, and an injury-plagued pitcher. All of whom potentially block better and cheaper players! What's the point in having one of the best farm systems in baseball if you continually block young talent by overpaying overrated veterans?
3:00 PM, March 07, 2008
Isn't Jones going to be playing CF for the Dodgers? That moved Pierre to left ... although watching him throw to 3rd from right would be fun.
3:02 PM, March 07, 2008
This comment has been removed by the author.
3:03 PM, March 07, 2008
Yeah Kemp/(Player name) will play right, Jones in center, and (Player name)/Pierre in left.
I don't get it there. (Player name) is ready to get the everyday shot and is an outstanding defensive CF (much better than Jones at this stage), and (Player name) needs a shot, too. But instead, we throw $80 million at Pierre and Jones. And this is after already letting (player name) go who had a great year with another team last year.
Sorry about the blanks...these cats haven't been drafted yet.
3:06 PM, March 07, 2008
MP, it is my opinion that you should ethier say the young players' names or shut the fuck up.
That said, Jason, feel free to delete this.
3:11 PM, March 07, 2008
Another case of an "i" in the wrong place ... it's an epidemic!
3:13 PM, March 07, 2008
A swing and a miss. You almost had it ET
3:13 PM, March 07, 2008
A swing and a miss? I know what you did ... I was just trying to knock people off the track. Perhaps I should have said "It's an epideimic!"
What I almost had was Andruw Jones. Here's hoping the Dodgers play 6 OF's about the same amount of time.

Apparently Jason didn't leave a list...
5:10 PM, March 07, 2008
What is going on with all the deleted comments? Jeeze.
I hate Roy. I say it every year at the draft, but he always takes the guy I was hoping for. Him and Peter just kill me every year.
5:11 PM, March 07, 2008
Jason, if you are struggling to find another .235 hitter, email me and I'll send you a list.
Now hurry up and pick.
5:34 PM, March 07, 2008
Tom, very nice. I didn't even catch it the first time I read it. It gets to stay!
6:40 PM, March 07, 2008
I deleted a couple comments related to Bish picking Loney ... one asking if I could go ahead and make my pick and the other asking "If you're going to take a keeper, why not Ramirez?" I did so because Bish quickly rectified the situation. So, little harm was done. If he had picked Loney and disappeared for 10 hours then I wouldn't have been so forgiving. So, that is the reason for two of the deleted comments.
7:15 PM, March 07, 2008
Yeah, Ramirez woulda been a good choice. I'll be sure to pick him next. Actually, I would have picked Brett Favre, but there was that whole retirement thing... :)
8:45 PM, March 07, 2008
Isn't everyone sitting at home tonight waiting for their turn to pick? ... or is that just me?
9:33 PM, March 07, 2008
I'm pathetic. Actually, I fell asleep with my son after a rousing game of Ratatouille on his VSmile. Now I'm turning my computer off. Happy drafting Zack.
10:33 PM, March 07, 2008
What, do the internets not exist at the U of W? Its not that hard to use the Google.
VSmile is an educational video game system for kids 3-7. My mother-in-law got it for Jay for Christmas.
5:46 AM, March 08, 2008
oh how i long for the days of getting 2+ rounds done in a day. weekends used to be good for at least a dozen picks, alas. guess i should not bitch too mightily at this point, b/c i will be responsible for massive delays in the later rounds.
2:39 PM, March 08, 2008
I think Justin should be ok at the hot corner this year.
4:32 PM, March 08, 2008
I reached a little bit on Jackson to fill 1B, but thought Encarnacion was the best player left on the board. I couldn't pass him up.
I definitely wasn't intending to fill up my UT slots with 3Bs by the 4th round... In retrospect, maybe I should have taken D. Lee over Atkins.
5:01 PM, March 08, 2008
Yeah, it's tough when there are 24 picks before you get another shot.
5:09 PM, March 08, 2008
I seriously thought about Encarnacion and almost took him. Don't know why I took Hermida over him. They are pretty close, but I think Hermida has a little higher ceiling. Encarnacion has had fewer health problems and more total success, so we'll see.
8:28 PM, March 08, 2008
Reminder - Roy (byrnes/Holiday) and Jody (Howard) do not have picks this round. Just post their picks for them.
8:36 PM, March 08, 2008
Yeah, it is definitely a little more difficult than the first draft in this league. I looked at Khalil Greene last time through ... he's great if he's giving you 27 HR's, but if he's down around 15 (where he sat the previous 3 years), why bother? Actually, it seems a lot more sparse this year than last, as far as available talent ... maybe it's just me.
Jason - you seem to be pretty high on Hermida ... you've grabbed him before (have you had him all 3 years now?) - I think.
9:39 PM, March 08, 2008
Maybe this is out of bounds, but the Cain pick got me thinking: what's the over/under line for runs for the Giants this year? 300? 400? (yeah, I'm exaggerating a tiny bit)
I think it will be an interesting race between the Giants (683 last year) and Nationals (673 last year), although I think Lastings Milledge is poised for a breakout .300, 30, 30, 100, 100 season.
Without looking, who was third in the NL in runs scored last year (behind the Phillies and the Rockies)?
9:53 PM, March 08, 2008
Ironically, last year I was much higher on Hermida, just because he was a bit of a sleeper. I wouldn't say he was a guy I was targeting, but when I sat down and looked at his stats after the all-star break last year, I was pretty impressed. Probably can't quite do it over a full season, but I figured it was worth the risk.
11:19 PM, March 08, 2008
greene was a bit of a stretch, but looking at the SS gaps in rosters and the players beyond him, i had to go for quality in that slot.
conor and edwin flying off caught me by surprise. i was hoping for one of them. durnit.
fukodome was a mystery to me until i watched the cubs game (kudos to WGN for finally pulling their heads out of their asses), where he did the swishy-smooth ichiro float out of the box as he swings. im not sure why, but that makes me think he is a good hitter. im hoping with a hee sop choi that works plus steals.
talent does seem to be thinning at a much quicker pace than years past. at this rate, we should have a few part-timers in active lineups, which is always good to me.
12:53 AM, March 09, 2008
Yes, Jennifer is my stage name.
8:32 AM, March 09, 2008
I am assuming that Roy made that 4.9 pick for Evan in his stead? Since, after all, Roy had no pick in this round as I posted his keeper.
12:41 PM, March 09, 2008
Yes, that pick was from Evan's list that he sent to me and Roy.
(Roy (or anyone else), am I correct that "me and Roy" is correct instead of "Roy and I"? I seem to remember Roy correcting me about this usage in high school and want to make sure proper grammar has stuck with me...)
3:10 PM, March 09, 2008
3:35 PM, March 09, 2008
Way to loosen up a little bit.
3:49 PM, March 09, 2008
I was worried that my 4.5 hour drive back from Vegas would put me as the slow poke in this round - Joe saves my reputation again!
n.B. - you may notice that my yahoo screenname is and has always been my porn name. Y'all been scooped.
5:02 PM, March 09, 2008
I actually talked to Joe twice today, so I imagine he'll pick at some point. The first time he was just finishing up a round of golf.
Joe, if you won't be around to make you pick in the next round, please send me a short list with a few players so I can make your next pick in a more expeditious manner.
Avi, feel free to do the same if you see this before going to bed (its already 10:30 in Miami, so perhaps its too late?).
Thanks
7:34 PM, March 09, 2008
Great - I'm glad I could catch up.
9:19 PM, March 09, 2008
One more thing. Everyone here follows a lot of baseball. Has anyone every seen a switch pitcher. In the Rice game today, Creighton had a guy that threw both left and right. He had a glove that could be used on either hand. Crazy!
9:20 PM, March 09, 2008
No ... but I've heard rumors of them.
9:28 PM, March 09, 2008
I remember reading a long time ago about an old school pitcher in the majors that did it. The only thing that stuck in my mind was that there is a MLB rule that you can't pitch from both sides in the same AB.
9:30 PM, March 09, 2008
I also read that Joe was non-dextrous and can't made a draft pick with either hand. Very sad.
9:32 PM, March 09, 2008
Jason, did you think of asking him who he would like to select when you talked to him post-golf?
9:39 PM, March 09, 2008
Oh, it would be awful if you could switch arms during an AB ... every pitch Bobby would bring in a new hitter in the LF spot!
9:52 PM, March 09, 2008
It didn't occur to me, but I had been away from the computer all day and didn't realize he was up yet.
Joe, if you ever read this, we need to get you on a system where you make picks a little quicker! Opening day is rolling ever closer.
9:53 PM, March 09, 2008
How is Jay's development?
9:57 PM, March 09, 2008
He's on gmail chat ... should I say something to him?
10:00 PM, March 09, 2008
He appears to be a lefty. His pitches have some natural sink to them. He has a nice, effortless arm action. Still, he's a fairly raw prospect and, like Deolis Guerra, is mostly projection at this point.
10:01 PM, March 09, 2008
You need to have him throw some with the right arm, too.
10:02 PM, March 09, 2008
Joe is? Hell, yes, tell him to make his damn pick and stop chatting up the ladies. Priorities!
Then tell him to email me with a list for his next pick if he doesn't plan on checking his email for a while tomorrow!
10:02 PM, March 09, 2008
Joe says he's on it ... so you can play your VSmile with a clear mind ... wouldn't want Jay having any additional advantages.
10:08 PM, March 09, 2008
Good lord, I dont check this thing for a few hours Sunday night and theres like 30 posts I need to catch up on upon getting in to work (a little late thanks to daylight saving time) this morning. Such a talkative group, we have.
8:52 AM, March 10, 2008
Ah, I see the draft is once again moving along at quite a brisk pace...
9:02 AM, March 10, 2008
Last year this board had 421 posts over a month and a half... We currently have over 150 in 5 days.
We still have people that don't realize that now that they've joined our league that they have also entwined their lives w/ ours.
For the experienced members of this league, when our significant other notices us fuming for no reason, we can just point to a name on the list of members in the league and they'll understand...
51 picks down, 285 to go.
10:04 AM, March 10, 2008
Typo, my bad.
287 to go.
10:05 AM, March 10, 2008
I'm starting to get the feeling that the NFL Draft (excruciatingly long as it is) might just finish before our fantasy baseball draft.
10:21 AM, March 10, 2008
On the plus side, by the time we pick those 23rd round prospects, most of them will be in either the Hall of Fame or the government cheese line, taking out the speculation as to their actual value.
10:40 AM, March 10, 2008
Yeah, I didn't sign up for this whole entwinement bit. Jason fooled me again! But I did find myself debating the merits of adding other managers to my GChat list this morning... a dangerous proposition indeed.
11:19 AM, March 10, 2008
11:50 AM, March 10, 2008
ok, i understand not wanting to turn in a list. sometimes, especially if you give a list to an owner close to you in draft order, you may be revealing your hand and prompt a snipe or two. but i feel if you dont want to submit a list, you should have some way to check the draft every four hours or so, before/after work, in/out of bed, etc.
i complain only b/c i know things will slow greatly for a couple of us in about 10 days, which we disclosed ahead of time, and i want to finish before the season starts.
ok, i feel much better now.
12:10 PM, March 10, 2008
Avi needs to look @ how he's managing his time. If class is taking up so much of his time, then I think he needs to multitask by sleeping in class or while studying.
12:22 PM, March 10, 2008
Well, seeing as how we have 4 rounds worth of late keepers who come out of that pool, that moves reaches up to the 13th round (kind of scary). And, if you factor in uncertainty (anyone looked at the team across the bay from Oakland lately?) and inevitable platoon situations ... well ... it's a little depressing. And, shouldn't the draft be slowing down at that point, as it becomes harder to find contributors ... that's even more depressing. On the bright side, at least there will be a lot of picks skipped due to all the keepers.
12:27 PM, March 10, 2008
Perhaps if he's having to study this much, maybe he's not cut out for whatever it is that he's studying for?
12:28 PM, March 10, 2008
FYI, Avi sent me 2 names and asked me to post his picks, but one of them (Kelly Johnson) was a keeper. I emailed him back, but he hasn't responded yet. Hopefully he is still on the internets and can either post his picks or get back to me fairly quickly.
12:58 PM, March 10, 2008
Is there more than one internet? If so, I have dibs on www.sex.com and www.porn.com. One of those sites sold for around $1 million last year.
1:03 PM, March 10, 2008
Oh yeah, and unless Avi takes the guy Joe wants, I will be able to post a pick for Lynlee, Joe, and Bish, so things should start flying along fairly quickly.
1:04 PM, March 10, 2008
Your esteemed President W referred to the internet as "the internets" in one of his 2004 debates with John Kerry. So my use of "internets" is a Bushism. Kind of like strategery, only it actually happend.
In other news, Jenn continues to practice her love every day.
1:06 PM, March 10, 2008
Either that "practice" is an inside joke I'm unaware of or her hormones are out of whack w/ the new pregnancy and you are the benefactor.
Midday trists help keep the love alive in a marriage especially if you're playing hookie from work to get the nookie.
1:08 PM, March 10, 2008
It was another Bushism. Speaking in favor of a medical malpratice cap, he said something to the effect of "so OBGYNs can practice their love". He obviously meant "so OBGYNs can practice WHAT they love", but its still funny as hell when you consider what OBGYNs do.
1:14 PM, March 10, 2008
And to answer your question before you ask it - No, I have no idea why Joe feels its necessary to have 4 closers in a 13 team NL-only league. He now has 25% of the league's closers and only roster space to play 3 of the 4.
I didn't really like picking Hoffman where I did, but I suspected a bunch of closers were about to come off the board and he is pretty reliable (at least until September).
1:34 PM, March 10, 2008
Hoffman is dogshit. He is down to an 85mph fastball and 75mph changeup. I saw him get shelled a half a dozen times last year. Thats why I took Wagner where I did...reliable piching seems hard to come by in this league!
1:38 PM, March 10, 2008
Yeah, I thought of C Cordero over Hoffman, but the Padres are a better team and he always seems to save 40 games, despite the occasional shelling. Hopefully he holds on another year.
I thought his fastball has been down to 85 mph for like 4 years?
1:41 PM, March 10, 2008
I think once your fastball drops like that, you officially become a "wily veteran"
Speaking of reaching for wily players...Wily Mo???
1:45 PM, March 10, 2008
As long as you have a job as a closer, and you play for a team that wins games, you will pick up saves. Hoffman has enough inertia to keep his job until he starts blowing half his chances, and that's probably pretty hard to do in the NL, even at 85 mph. Except against the Rockies, maybe.
1:50 PM, March 10, 2008
Yeah he has been below 90 for many years now...the difference last year is that he was hardly throwing any fastballs at all. Probably 75% of his pitches are change ups. And it seems to me that if you're not changing up from anything, its not as great of a weapon. NL batters seem to agree. That being said, he probably will still have 35 saves and an ERA around 3...if the Padres can manage to put any runs on the board...and lets hope that they can't.
2:00 PM, March 10, 2008
Looking at Avi's last two picks...its good to know that he is taking young players and looking to plan for the future. Those last two picks should be assets for his team for many years to come.
2:02 PM, March 10, 2008
I was a little disappointed that we had to wait 12 hours for the Wily Mo selection. Especially when we could have just given him Neifi Perez and called it even.
2:05 PM, March 10, 2008
... and speaking of dogshit, did somebody just draft Gagne?
2:06 PM, March 10, 2008
Jeez, the disgruntled Dodgers fans are out in force today. Michael, its OK for someone to draft a closer that has shut your beloved Dodgers down year after year. Justin, it is OK for someone to draft a closer who blew his arm out after signing a fat contract for your beloved Dodgers.
Not our fault your team is continually run by a (revolving) moron. Your scouting directors are always good though!
2:09 PM, March 10, 2008
The Kemp/Billingsley duo will return the Dodgers to greatness (much as they carried The Cellar '07 squad to what was undoubtedly the single greatest season that this league has ever seen).
2:17 PM, March 10, 2008
And don't forget the Martin/Loney combo which are sure to lead the Dodgers to the pennant, and the Canseco Pool Party team to the Bagel's Playground championship!
2:24 PM, March 10, 2008
I'm pretty sure the worst fantasy move I have ever made was dropping Loney last season. I still weep when I think of that boneheaded move.
2:27 PM, March 10, 2008
Sorry for the wait guys, I had an hour long meeting ... it was hard to foresee 5 picks in that amount of time (or an entire day, for that matter).
The Dodgers, just like Just One Jasonaire, are out for the count ... how could anyone recover from losing one of the LaRoches?
2:40 PM, March 10, 2008
Well, I definitely have never agonized this much about a 5th round pick before. This is gonna get really freakin interesting once we hit the 15th, 16th, etc round.
2:48 PM, March 10, 2008
Wow, going to rookie well early this year...
3:18 PM, March 10, 2008
My math may be off, but this is the equivalent of the 19th round of a 10 team non-keeper league. I figured "hell, it's better than Wily Mo"
3:21 PM, March 10, 2008
If this league contracts back to 10 or 11 teams next season there will be very few decent keepers from this draft.
3:25 PM, March 10, 2008
If Wily Mo ever figures it out ... he could be a beat. How many years have people been saying that, though?
When would Maybin have gone last year? 10th round? I think we are far from an equilibrium with keepers in this league.
3:25 PM, March 10, 2008
I agree, with the equilibrium comment, not the Wily Mo comment
3:27 PM, March 10, 2008
Sorry, I meant beast. I've got the likelihood of him figuring it out this year at about the same as me being Dr. Tromble this time next year. And, I think next March I'll still be going by Evan.
3:32 PM, March 10, 2008
Wow on the Maybin pick. Passing up quite a few guys who are all but guaranteed 15-25 HR for a prospect with no guarantees of breaking camp with the big club. Who knows, maybe he has an out-of-the-blue rookie season like Hanley Ramirez?!
5:46 PM, March 10, 2008
Way to go Tom, now everyone is trying to find their Cameron Maybin. Great!
6:38 PM, March 10, 2008
Hmmm, Joe and Avi seem to be rubbing off on Jody...
7:49 PM, March 10, 2008
7:57 PM, March 10, 2008
I wanted to select X with my 25th round pick (26th already Hill). I don't know that he has Jay's upside, but he's closer to major league ready!
8:00 PM, March 10, 2008
Justin, good luck with Lidge. I might have won both this league and Zack's league last year if it wasn't for that bum.
Well, that might be overstating the case against Lidge (especially in this league where I also made an early, inspired Morgan Ensberg pick). But he certainly hurt both my teams when he was drafted as my sole closer.
God speed.
8:32 PM, March 10, 2008
I think the notion that you would've won Zack's league if it weren't for Lidge is a bit far-fetched. That's like saying you would've won if Yahoo would have counted the Padres-Rockies one-game playoff. Absurd, I say.
8:45 PM, March 10, 2008
Wow, I totally forgot about the whole Rockies/Padres thing. Didn't I really calculate it out that I would have won (or at least might have won) if they had counted the game? I think there was some uncertainty due to Yahoo! rounding WHIP and ERA, rather than telling us exactly how many earned runs and baserunners our pitchers allowed. Still, that was pretty sweet.
8:48 PM, March 10, 2008
Thanks Jason, and good luck to you with your 48 year old pile of dogshit.
It does pain me to use a 5th rounder on this guy... but I'm sure he'll be fine, Philly has a pitcher's park, right?
8:51 PM, March 10, 2008
We're going to need a bag of ice here. Injury report for Felix Pie is as follows:
"CF Felix Pie’s bid to earn a starting job has been slowed by surgery to fix a twisted testicle."
8:23 AM, March 11, 2008
I'm starting a new comment thread.
8:25 AM, March 11, 2008
Speaking of 48-year oold piles of dogshit....Tom?
