Cabrera is a solid #3 pick. They had Jenn Yannone hitting behind him last year and he did fine. Plus, now Jenn has an extra year of experience so she can offer more protection.
He's baby Pujols and is great for consistency.
Feel free to move discussion to the other thread. I thought having a discussion thread at the top would encourage people to stop using the draft thread for discussion.
Cabrera's bound for a breakout power season one of these years, he's still amazingly young. I'm just wondering why Tom didn't trade me his 7th rounder for my 8th! What were you thinking on that one?
Where'd Roy go? One minute I'm chatting with him on gmail, then the next minute, he's idle and not picking? I wonder if the stress got to him and he's in the bathroom puking. Maybe partaking this year wasn't such a good idea, it might just be too much for the poor guy between the demands of fantasy baseball and the demands of that wife of his.
Yahoo! hasn't started yet this year. But I think the eligibility rules are: 5 games started at a position OR 10 games played at a position. If a guy played a few games there last year but is expected to start at that position this year, they might make him eligible at that position anyway.
Duncan has 11 at 1B and 75 in OF so he should be eligible at both. No promises since I can't control it.
Sorry didn't realize the other board was draft exclusive. I am not overly CPU savy.
What is the draft-waiting time penalty? 24-hrs, then you lose your pick? Maybe 24- hrs then you get the highest guy from the cbssportsline list? Does the 24 hrs. run on weekends?
Why not just put the person you are keeping? Or, the person who picks before a slot where a keeper is can input both of them (or all three in the case of me picking #7 and Soriano and Pujols going 8th and 9th).
Jody - I was just going to enter the pick like it was actually made.
Miskeaux - no penalty, but people are encouraged to leave a queue with me (or someone else) if they are going to be away from a computer for a while and their turn is coming up. No rush over weekends, sometimes no picks are made.
Where is Roy? It shouldn't take too long to make a 1st round pick since its hard to go wrong. 3rd round picks are a little tougher.
I don't think he was ready for the draft to start, so he may be frantically trying to do some kind of statistical analysis. Or, he may actually be working on his research so he can finally get out of Baltimore.
Hey, no need to get out of Baltimore! If he sticks around long enough, they may actually get a baseball team worth watching!
I agree that he probably wasn't ready. I'm glad we got started early, but I figured it might catch someone unaware. I'm just glad Peter's 1st round pick was already made. I imagine we might get stuck on him for a little while, no telling if he is on call or something tonight.
Milledge is worth an 18th rounder, if not for this year for down the road ... maybe ... and Maholm started to come around at the end of last year, I thought. Plus, guys named Pat are always good ... Pat Konerko, Pat Molitor, etc.
Jason likes to grab people like Milledge before that ... and according to my brother's analysis, Maholm was worthy of a 14th round pick based on last year's performance. So, given that he's an up-and-comer, I felt he was worthy of a 14th round pick ... plus, it's not like I had to pass over good players to use my keepers ... the cupboard was pretty bare.
Wow, good 1st round picks everyone. Before the draft, I was hoping at least 1 (and maybe 2) of the guys drafted before me would fall to me. Not a single one fell to me and I was stuck with my back-up options (not that they are so bad). Seriously, you all had to pick exactly the guys I had my eye on? The makings of a competitive year.
Oh yeah, and Maholm was quite good after the all-star break last year. He will probably have more value then a 14th round pick, though it is arguable whether he would have actually been drafted by the 14th round. Either way, I agree that Evan didn't really pass over anyone more worthy of being kept.
Jason - you are right. I was at the Rice game watching Rice win 5-0 over CMSU. Savery pitched the first two and looked great. I ended up getting 4 season tickets with some friends - so should be a fun season.
As for this draft - damn you Jason. You took the two guys I was thinking about. Of course, I don't think I can go wrong with Roy - super consistent and should get more wins with the Astros' improved bats....
Ok ... let me be the first to second guess my own pick ... I may have reached for Furcal a bit. Anyone want to tell me that the NL SS pool has is lacking and I made a great play grabbing a fairly consistent avg., run, and steals guy before he was gone?
I agree with Zack. Furcal was a slight reach, but he's still young enough to have a career year. Even then, its not so much of a reach that you should question the decision. If he fit the profile you were looking for (SB at a thin position), then you done good. Zack is right, SS is quite thin beyond the top few.
Sheets is that good if he's healthy. No telling until the end of the year though.
Damn, I thought Ramirez was off the board! Oh well, I've got my steals. I definitely would have gone with Ramirez ... I thought someone kept him. I guess I better get my shit in order.
Yeah, but at the same time 3B is a lot deeper then SS. Tom had a good point, no way Furcal would have made it back to you and there are still good 3B out there.
About time Carpenter went. He's the consensus #1 NL pitcher, though honestly I have no problem with Oswalt, Zambrano, and Peavy going before him. Peavy has the most talent, but has the highest injury risk. Zambrano could be about the same as Peavy if he could cut down on walks. Even then, he probably still has a higher WHIP then the other 3. Oswalt probably won't K as many as Carpenter, but really it is a crap-shoot between those 4.
I was tempted to take one of them, but since I kept 3 pitchers I figured I should go for hitters.
Off topic, but who is the most dominanting athlete in his or her sport? A lot of people are talking about Tiger vs. Federer. I say Takeru Kobayashi.
Serious, I just saw him eat 58 bratwurst in 10 minutes and then 97 Krystal burgers (including bun) in 8 minutes. He has never lost to a human (although he did lose to a Kodiak polar bear once). Tiger and Federer have both lost, so until someone takes down Kobayashi, I don't think there is any contest.
My first thought is Kodiak polar bear? Jason, WTF are you thinking? Every true Alaskan knows that there are no polar bears on Kodiak Island. Perhaps you meant Kodiak grizzly bear (the bears that Kodiak is famous for). Roy, I'm surprised (and maybe a little disappointed) you didn't catch that.
My second thought is that I'm surprised that Carpenter slipped as far as he did. Even so, I can't really muster an argument against the pitchers that went before him. I think they're that close (along with Sheets and Webb). There's no dominant P in the NL like Santana in the AL.
My third thought is that 1)Kobayashi is not a real athlete and 2) Tiger is far and away superior to Federer. Maybe I'm biased to choose the American, but isn't tennis more prone to such a run as Federer has had. Seriously, Sampras was pretty dominant just a few years ago (I haven't actually checked any facts comparing these two, I'm just going off my own recollection which can be severely skewed by that mixture of hops and barley). Alright, I kind of lost where I was going with that, so I'm just going to end it now.
I disagree. I think Federer's streak is more impressive. When he goes out there, everyone he plays is playing one on one against him, and not just playing for themselves like in golf. And to go through an entire grand slam (the Aussie Open last month) without losing a single set? Thats absolutely unheard of.
I, however, agree with Justin that Kobayashi is not a real athlete. When your "sport" consists of shoving processed rat feces down your throat, thats a sign that you are not an athlete. He may be an unparalleled competitor, but certainly nothing even remotely resembling an athlete.
And on another note, what a disappointing Super Bowl. What a poorly played game. The Bears supposedly have this great defense and the Colts supposely have a crappy running game, so of course the Colts run for almost 200 yards. I just wonder if Vegas had an over/under line for turnovers. A lot of money would have changed hands on that one.
Two things about Woods v. Federer (EDLA). First, I think it is a lot easier to be a dominant tennis player then a dominant golfer. I think the margin for mistakes is much smaller in golf (small club head, small ball versus large racket and bigger ball). When you screw up in golf, it can set you back a couple shots. When you screw up in tennis, you lose one point and move on with the next one. One bad shot can lose a golf tournament, but that isn't really the same in tennis.
Second, in golf you have to battle the elements. Wind is rarely a factor for tennis. And sure they play on a few different surfaces, but not all in the same day like they do in golf (fairway, greens, rough, sand, bark, etc.).
As for Kobayashi, the dude is cut. He could probably kick the hell out of Woods or Federer. He's definitely athletic and, at least to some extent, an athlete. Now whether you consider competitive eating a "sport" is an entirely different matter. I don't think it is. But whatever it is, I give Kobayashi's dominance the edge over Tiger and Federer. He's never lost to a human, so until he loses at least once I don't think its close.
Did you guys not read my post? I was going to blast Jason on "There's a Catch" for saying Kodiak polar bear, but I didn't think anyone would actually see the comment, so I didn't bother. What were you thinking? I guess it just shows that Jason is not, in fact, a real Alaskan.
Competitive eating is not a sport, no matter how much ESPN shows it. You can look back at our definition of sport, too. And, until I see Kobayashi do anything other than devour a plate of food quickly, I'm not ready to call him an athlete. Plus, he fails to qualify for contention in the quest to be the "Most dominant athlete in his sport" because, while he may be dominant, competitive eating is not a sport ... and it's disgusting and a waste of food. Jason, why don't you ask your Jenn if she wants you to start being a competitive eater. I can't imagine it's a real healthy lifestyle.
Surfaces in golf? The surfaces are fairly consistent. You know that most golf courses have greens, fairways, rough, sand, water, etc. The types of grass and the length change things up. More importantly, though, they change layout on you. Federer is playing on the same court all the time. Federer can perfect two serves - one down the middle and one out wide - from each side of the little white mark. If Tiger hits the same tee shot on 4 different par 3's, he's probably not going to be very close to at least three of the pins. It would be impressive if Tiger mastered ice golf. Of course, it would be nice if Federer could beat Nadal on clay, although Sampras never figured clay out either.
I think Tiger has had some better runs at majors than Federer's at the Aussie. Federer almost lost the first set to Gonzalez. To correct for the sport bias, let's have a skills competition where based on the tennis players' shots, they are faced with a resulting shot. They have to finish 4 rounds of 18 holes. Federer has to put his score up against the scores of everyone else. For Tiger, you set up a bracket. Each pair then plays a best of 5 set match, where a point is won only when you get a better score on the hole than your opponent. So, it may take a while. In fact, it may take 20-30 rounds for some of the matches to finish. But, I'd take Woods and I'd take the field against Federer.
Hey guys I think I am on the clock, however I am also in a deposition today. I will definately be headed back to the office, though. So expect my picks later today. Sorry for the hold up.
Remember everyone, feel free to use queues if you are going to be away from a computer for a while. To do this, just send me (or someone else if you trust them more) a list of players you would like to draft, along with instructions of who to draft (i.e. highest player from the list that isn't drafted before your turn, highest pitcher from the list if no hitters are drafted before your pick, etc.).
This will help speed up the draft process.
Not saying Misko needed to do it in this case, but just wanted to send a reminder.
I will be out of town from today through Feb. 15, so I may send queues to someone.
As to Kodiak Bears - I've never been to Kodiak. I do not claim to know anything of the island nor about its resident bear population. I do know that given its geography, it doesn't surprise me that they aren't polar bears. I don't know if I copied that from the article I was reading at the time or if I'm just stupid (probably both).
I suspect a more likely answer is that I just don't care.
However, the correct answer is that I cleverly inserted a mistake into my off-topic rant that would occupy my competition's feeble minds in the coming days so they were devastatingly distracted from their draft picks and hence, unable to compete.
Hey guys, depo still going strong, they almost NEVER go this long AND I am in BR (and hour and a half away from my cozy office in NOLA). It is 4PM and still not over so there is a chance I may not even head back to my desk today. Sorry, I'll pick FIRST thing tomorrow AM and promise to email J-Big players in the future.
If you all hate me now, wait till I have a 20 point lead by mid-May!!
No offense, but that's a stupid way to do it. You don't just throw numbers at a problem and hope they magically lead you to the answers. Stats don't lie, but people interpreting them sometimes are full of **** (censoring for Jason's sake)!
Dominance is relative. In baseball, 110 wins is fantastic! No team has ever won 120, which is less than 75% of the games. Football and basketball teams routinely win that percentage of games. Does that mean that the Suns and Mavericks are more dominant than the Tigers in a given year? That's stupid!
Thus, you have to look deeper than grand slam and tournament wins when analyzing Tiger v. Roger. So, it makes no sense to look at Vegas odds ... did Vegas think Billy Joel would finish the anthem in 1:35?
Zack, did you also think the Bears should stick with Grossman because his record was good so far?
Since I know all your worlds were coming to a crashing end because I wasn't just picking someone off the top of my head in a break during a deposition, I dragged myself into work at 6:15PM to make my damn picks (and impress my bosses, though)
If it's applicable to Tiger v. Roger, it's applicable to baseball v. bball? I figured I'd bring it back to baseball because it's a fantasy baseball draft discussion board. If it's harder to win half the golf tournaments than it is to win all the tennis tournaments, Roger winning all the tennis tournaments is similarly dominating to Tiger winning half the golf tournaments.
Best (fantasy) player left on the board. I hate him, even though I've had him in Zack's league the past 2 years. Of course, that's mostly because I have an aversion to leadoff hitters with pitiful OBPs. Pierre needs to learn how to take a walk or learn how to be disruptive out of the 8 spot.
I don't know whether he will start the year with 2B eligibility in Yahoo! He didn't play there at all last year, but with another uber-stud available as SS, I guess the Nats figured they could move Lopez to 2B.
I'm at work and don't have access to my email - so some let Jason know he is up with two picks. Of course, he checks this board every 10 sec so he actually has probably already made his pick....
Surprised the dick talk has distracted everyone so much that no one takes issue with my Burrell & Lidge picks. I felt like both were a little early, but I'm expecting bounce-backs from both and hoping they are worth these picks, even if there was some chance of them making it back to me.
A lot of us have questioned each others picks, but lets give it up for J-Big for being the first to openly question his own pick. Nice one there, champ!
On a lighter note, my job is making my eyeballs bleed. Thank goodness next Friday is my last day here!
Hmm, we'll see if Chipper stays healthy. He can certainly still hit if he stays on the field.
Some singers don't speak the day of a concert to preserve their voices. I don't think Chipper should walk before he plays games to make sure his legs stay healthy.
I was bummed, but I figured Peter the Astros fan wouldn't overlook the former Astro. Hopefully it works out for me. My history of drafting closers in this league (Gagne last year) hasn't exactly been stellar.
Great pick Zack. Lucky to have Smoltz fall that far. To me, the 2 biggest surprises so far are Carpenter and Smoltz falling as far as they did. Both could have gone 1-1.5 rounds earlier and no one would have questioned their value that early.
I really was tempted to take him, but I just figured I didn't need a 4th starting pitcher quite yet. Of course, depending on Young to be my ace is kind of scary...
I have Michael's 5th round pick. Michael has my 7th round pick. I have Michael's 9th round pick. Michael has my 13th round pick. This was the only trade involving draft picks, all other picks are in order.
I value Smoltz at slightly below the Carpenter/Peavy/Oswalt/etc. level so he's definitely good value here. His consistency is worth quite a bit at this point. Willis, Sanchez, and Myers are all a bit inconsistent. Higher ceilings then Smoltz at this point, but they carry a little more risk. Myers is pretty consistent too and could always have a career year (he's at a good age for it).
Did you ever hit one out of A-K? Can't remember how long you played baseball. Did you play again your senior year like all the other Houston (coach, not city) pansies who deprived the baseball team of their talents until their senior year (specifically Lockhart, but I'm sure there were others).
They moved homeplate back at one point, making the field a little bigger then when Roy and I played there.
A-K is in the "Valley", which is basically suburban Juneau. It is definitely not downtown. It is ballpark in Juneau for the high school and older rec teams.
Ben emailed me and said he was on his way to Plaquemine (which for non-New Orleans people, might as well be Adair-Kennedy, or is it Kennedy-Adair?) Sounds like he is going to a hearing, so he should be back at his office around 1-2 central time to make his picks.
Of course, that doesn't explain why he doesn't have his list with them so he can just email me with his 2 picks.
Ben, seriously, you need to stop worrying about "work" and get a little more obsessive about this hole fantacy bacseball thing.
For those questioning my spelling, I did it to make sure Ben could read it.
I think the wife-beater has a little more potential for a breakout year at this point in his career. Especially if he starts concentrating on pitching rather than domestic abuse...
I agree with Jason on Smoltz, very good pick-up at this point. But I do believe that I was ridiculed by some for taking him in the 4th round last year... At this point I'm wondering if 2005 was an outlier for Willis and whether he'll ever have another year quite so good. Of course, so far he's been great on odd years, so it could work out. Schmidt was next up on my list, he should be solid in Dodger Stadium.
Comparing the rounds that a player was picked last year with the round he was picked this doesn't work because of the keepers. Many, if not most, of our keepers would have been taken by this point in the draft. That really makes players chosen at this point equivalent to eighth round picks (or so, the math and relative rankings would differ by player and manager).
This is how I rationalize taking someone like Mike Cameron in the 4th round. I lie to myself and say that this is really the 8th or 9th round and I got a steal.
I'm still kicking myself over my last two picks. Sure they could both work out. But if I was going to reach, I should have gone with 1 safe guy and 1 reach, not 2 reaches. Aargh.
Am I the only one who ISNT questioning his own picks? (Utley, Carpenter, Delgado, Schmidt.) All you guys seem to think you are making mistakes as you are making them. My only problem now is that 4.9 was my last pick until 7.2 I wonder what third-string leftfielder will be available then.
Yes, I am doing quite a bit of reaching. I made the decision I would rather get the players I want and hope they rebound (like I expect) rather then go with guys I don't like for various reasons.
Basically, I don't really regret my picks, but they are making me nervous. Burrell might be the only regret, mainly because he still might be around. Feel free to make me feel better by saying someone else would have taken him by now...
I wouldn't have taken him (or Ensberg or Lidge) by now, but I'm not surprised to see them gone at this point. Burrell doesn't seem like much of a stretch. He should put up good numbers and get a lot of RBI opportunities down in fifth spot in the order. I only draft Brewers and Padres, so none of these guys fit into my master plan.
I would like to point out that NO ONE HAS LEFT A QUEUE with me this year. Don't be afraid. If you pick close to me and don't trust me with your queue, send it to someone who just picked and won't pick again for a little while. Or send a short queue with only 1-3 players.
Kent was on my bounce-back (slightly) list. I like Phillips too, but I'm worried about him AVG. It really fell off after the break and he never hit for much AVG in the minors. I already have Andruw and Pat the Bat to drag down my average...
I like the RJ pick. I was thinking about him too. My only concern is the back surgery. Moving from the AL east to the NL can do good things for a pitcher (see Clemens, Roger and Arroyo, Bronson). It doesn't always work, but its probably worth the risk at this point.
Who is on the clock?? Whoever it is, they know they are up, right? Sorry about the occasional delay my picks, 1- I don't have internet at home (and I go to bed at like 9:30, I saw someone made a pick at 12:02 AM the other day, damn vampires!!) and 2- I am on the road alot.
I am tenative to leave a long queue, because I just want to look over who is around and who people have taken. If I can't see the 5 picks before me, there might be a serious run on SSs or something.
Unlike Zack's league, when I am (and will be again) drunk enough by the end of the auctions that I start picking guys with funny names, Pirate middle relief, who the Budweiser tells me is keyed for a breakout season, and Asian players (remember when I spent $29 on Jumpin' Joe Randa!!). I have made all my picks with a clear head, so I have no excuse for queueing Kaz Matsui or Solomon Torres.
Misko: Did anyone ever see that show Man v. Beast?!?! It was great!! It pitted people vs. animals.
I remember Kobiashi was in a hot dog eating contest vs. a bear. I think he won actually.
Some sprinter lost to a zebra and a cheatah, but beat a giraffe.
An olympic swimmer swam against like a dolphin or something.
And some navy seal type guy did a monkeybars type obstance course vs. a chimp. The chimp lost, but after it crossed the finish line it started flexing and grinning and stuff. Who doesn't love monkeys!!
That was a great show. I guess PETA had a fit. As long as they aren't abusing the animals, I thought it was cool!! That bear probably didn't mind downing a few hot dogs, plus he could just stop eating whenever he felt like it.
By the way, has anyone seen the Pedigree pound dogs commercial?? Sadest thing EVER!! I LOVE mutts!! My dog can walk on the balance beam and run through that tunnel in dog agility class, but wouldn't be good enough for Man vs. Beast in anything, I don't think.
The bear won the eating contest. I think it would have been more entertaining if Kobayashi and the bear had matched off eating salmon out of an Alaska stream ... yummy, spawning dog salmon!
I thought Randy was a reach ... he's getting old and isn't exactly Roger Clemens when it comes to fitness. He's had a lot of back trouble and hasn't looked good the last couple of years, although the move to the NL does help ... I can't see it helping that much, but, I guess we'll see.
Anyone in an AL league going to give Pettitte a shot this year?
I actually wanted Phillips for his upside ... he could hit for a high avg., steal a bunch of bags and bang some HR's out of the 2B position. I don't know if Kent still has a big season in him. But, Phillips could also go in the crapper and get demoted to the minors, only to be called up in September when the rosters expand, too. That said, I needed someone with a little upside because my team is going to suck!
I disagree a little on RJ. I don't think he'll at all approach his previous NL seasons with AZ. Still, his peripheral numbers from last season indicate he had a little bad luck and/or was facing better hitters.
RJ: 1.24 WHIP, 172 K Jason Schmidt: 1.26 WHIP, 180 K
Yet RJ's ERA was 5.00 and Schmidt was 3.59. Perhaps a bit of a simplistic analysis, but useful none-the-less.
It's not all WHIP and K's ... what about HR's? Is Randy prone to giving up big innings? I think the biggest issue with Randy is whether or not he's going to be healthy at that age.
I was just trying to point out that the ERA was probably inflated some. He did give up more HR then he used to, so it is a concern (28 vs. Schmidt's 21, I think).
Still facing pitchers instead of DH's and getting out of the AL East should decrease HR a little.
I agree, biggest question will be health. If he throws 200+ innings, he should be a good pitcher (not excellent like he used to be).
Here's 2006 runs/game for each division: AL East 4.96 AL Cent 5.08 AL West 4.83 NL East 5.00 NL Cent 4.53 NL West 4.80
So you might expect a change of about .2 in Randy Johnson's ERA just from the move. But he was pitching for the Yankees, not against them, and the other AL East teams had an average of 4.76.
It is certainly true that Clemens' and Arroyo's ERAs dropped. But, they went to the NL Central, for one thing. And even that doesn't explain more than about half a run. They must also have improved their pitching (at least in terms of ERA). Clemens' ERA had to drop because the Astros weren't giving him any run support, right? He was trying to win.
Sorry about the delay in making my pick. Had some "issues" keep me busy at work today that I had not anticipated. I'll try to keep things moving in the future.
Of course, it could be argued that the stats are skewed because the pitchers have been better in the AL recently as well ... so that helps keep the runs per game down in spite of the better hitters and DH in the AL. Are there better pitchers in the AL? I have a hard time distinguishing because of the better lineups and DH in the AL. Imagine what Santana and Liriano (when healthy) would do in the NL!
I found girl in columbia and am away from computer. using treo instead.
peter is withdrawing from the league for being a little bitch and taking freel right before me. bitch. I nned a 2b and some SB. He is the guy I've been keeping my eye on all round. bastard!
any thoughts on hamels vs cain? I think hamels has a little more upside (more K and lower WHIP) but is more of a health risk. tough choice. hamels also pays for better offense, but in worse ballpark.
Yes it does. I'm beginning to second guess my keeper strategy now that I'm looking at everybody else's teams beside mine. I think my top six players are as good as any team's, but I'm not going to have a whole lot of depth.
I passed on keeping Beltran in the 2nd round for a reason.
Of course, the reason was that he would have been the 1st player taken in the 2nd round, which wouldn't have been that much of a discount...
But the other reason is because I thought there was move value keeping 6 guys then 5. Of course, some of my keepers (Hill and Olsen) are both injury risks and might be very inconsistent. Drew and Gonzalez will both be average for their positions (though they do have room for growth). Its just helpful to get "average" players that late in the draft. Really just depends on your keeper possibilities though.
I was thinking the same thing about closers. Rather disappointing actually, since closer runs are a tradition of snake-draft fantasy baseball!
Maybe we can all be innovative and hope for a run on catchers or something? Of course, given the quality of some of the catchers out there, the real rush might be in the 20th round...
As for closers, (out of the guys that were not kept) I think its because there are some pretty evident tiers. Wagner is clearly tier 1. After that, I would say the 2 Corderos and Gordon were another tier. Lidge doesn't really fit since he was a speculative pick. The rest of the unpicked guys or guys just getting picked are Tier 3 because of health concerns, age concerns, or job security concerns.
I think we would have had a run without keepers because Hoffman and Saito probably would have fit somewhere around tier 2, making it a bit more of a run. A run probably would have pulled a few of the tier 3 guys into the end of tier 2.
The head says "no" but the heart says "yes". I did not screw up the draft list, Evan and Tom made a trade just before the deadline, as previously stated. Fielder counted as a 7th round keeper even though he should have been an 8th round keeper, because Tom kept 2 players drafted in the 8th round. A bit confusing, but that's the way it is. Pick away.
Plus, Tom is the only guy more atuned to this then me (because he loves his job so much, I imagine) and would have promptly protested if we were wronging him in some way.
By the delay, you'd think he picked Ichiro or something...
No problem ... I was up early because my wife had to go in to work (overtime on a big project) and she woke me up because someone, during the middle of the right, ran into our mailbox and knocked it over. This is no Juneau mailbox with a wooden post ... this is an Oklahoma mailbox made out of brick. We think so drunk idiot forgot that the road curves and jumped the curb and knocked the sucker down. So, I have now picked and I don't think too much of a delay occurred ... although, without the mailbox incident, I definitely wouldn't have been up and picking at this hour!
Whatt kind of eligability do people think Rich Aurillia will have? He is a utility, guy, right?? So like (1B, 2B, 3B, CI, MI)??
Someone help me out, please.
Bummer about tthe mailbox. I wouldn't have thoughtt things like that happen in the Big Sky country of Okl. That seems like a New Orleans-y type story. Did anyone see the latest murder involved: 1- the "victim" had been in town for less than 4 hours and beat the perp up real bad 2- The prep goes home and his MOM (Yes, Mother) gave him a gun and told him to kill the kid 3- He goes and shots the victim.
Aurilia should be eligible at all of the infield positions (barely at 2B). Until Yahoo gets its fantasy stuff up and running, you should check out the player pages on cbssportsline. It lists how many games a player played and started in at each position.
Misko: Thanks, I plan to use Rich Aurillia's steller defense, versitility, unrelenting effort and posittive, team-first attitude to propel my team to victory!!
Misko: and before J-Big and the rest of the grammar gestapo swoop down on me like the spelling wizards they are, the "T" button is stticking on my CPU, I know there is only one t in positive... and sticking.
And yes smartasses, I did have to look up how to spell gestapo. gustopo was so far off, google didn't even suggest the right way.
Anyone need a lawyer!! I give 10% off for every mispelled word in any court pleading I file!!
I would normally be a little reluctant to give away my killer tools for nothing. But I'm feeling strangely generous this afternoon. So, here you go. The position eligibility of every player in MLB on one page. Knock yourself silly. Usual disclaimers apply.
tsk tsk, you cant talk about a player who hasnt been selected yet. There should be a penalty for that...like loss of your next draft pick or something. Yes, that would be a grand punishment.
I would like to quote the description of this post: "Use this post to discuss keepers, undrafted players, and whatever else you feel like."
Keepers, UNDRAFTED players, and whatever I feel like. Anyway, if there should be any punishments in this draft it should be for taking over a day to make a selection. One word: queue
Hmm, funny how I screwed up the description. I don't really care when it is someone everyone knows about, but others might. I'm more concerned about identifying potential sleepers & keepers.
I think Prior will win his 3rd straight Cy Young Award this season. It's a lock. He has such a smooth motion and the ball just flies out of his hand. Plus, he has solid control and filthy breaking stuff. He's damn near unhittable! I can't believe he wasn't gone in the 1st round, much less lasting until the 10th.
Sorry for the delay, I was at a location where blogs are blocked and my idiot (anyone who knows Roy will agree with me) brother wouldn't send me the list of picked players! So, I couldn't pick until I got home.
Misko: what team does Adam Hyzdu play for?? That guys is AWESOME!! I remember I asw him play in Altoona, then he played for the Bucs, he always played really well. I remember we started an informal fan club Adam Hyzdu fan club called "The Hyz-dudes"

I'm predicting a huge year from Ichiro...
8:36 AM, February 02, 2007
Thanks Joel! I was going to make an Ichiro pick at some point, but old "anonymous" ruined it for me.
11:22 AM, February 02, 2007
All those who have been mentally predicting that Misko would pick Bay since Peter announced his intention to keep Pujols, please say "aye".
"aye"
Ben, fix your keepers, per my email. It shouldn't affect the early part of the draft.
12:13 PM, February 02, 2007
Aye
12:15 PM, February 02, 2007
Evan - keep discussion over here. If you don't know who he is, why keep him?
12:38 PM, February 02, 2007
Sorry, didn't realize there was a discussion page. I know who Paul Maholm is, but who's this Pat guy you're telling me I'm keeping?
12:41 PM, February 02, 2007
OK, I'm an idiot and corrected it. Maybe I was thinking of Pat Listasch or something. Or maybe I just spell like Ben.
12:45 PM, February 02, 2007
Is there an eligibility list somewhere? I'm assuming Duncan is eligible at both 1B and OF.
1:19 PM, February 02, 2007
Cabrera is a solid #3 pick. They had Jenn Yannone hitting behind him last year and he did fine. Plus, now Jenn has an extra year of experience so she can offer more protection.
He's baby Pujols and is great for consistency.
Feel free to move discussion to the other thread. I thought having a discussion thread at the top would encourage people to stop using the draft thread for discussion.
1:21 PM, February 02, 2007
Cabrera's bound for a breakout power season one of these years, he's still amazingly young. I'm just wondering why Tom didn't trade me his 7th rounder for my 8th! What were you thinking on that one?
1:21 PM, February 02, 2007
Where'd Roy go? One minute I'm chatting with him on gmail, then the next minute, he's idle and not picking? I wonder if the stress got to him and he's in the bathroom puking. Maybe partaking this year wasn't such a good idea, it might just be too much for the poor guy between the demands of fantasy baseball and the demands of that wife of his.
1:23 PM, February 02, 2007
Yahoo! hasn't started yet this year.
1:24 PM, February 02, 2007
Misko says:
Sorry didn't realize the other board was draft exclusive. I am not overly CPU savy.
What is the draft-waiting time penalty? 24-hrs, then you lose your pick? Maybe 24- hrs then you get the highest guy from the cbssportsline list? Does the 24 hrs. run on weekends?
1:38 PM, February 02, 2007
When our turn comes up when we don't have a pick (me in 1st round), do we put down "Pass" and move on or what?
It might help for tracking purposes when we look back. Just a thought.
1:38 PM, February 02, 2007
Why not just put the person you are keeping? Or, the person who picks before a slot where a keeper is can input both of them (or all three in the case of me picking #7 and Soriano and Pujols going 8th and 9th).
1:41 PM, February 02, 2007
Jody - I was just going to enter the pick like it was actually made.
Miskeaux - no penalty, but people are encouraged to leave a queue with me (or someone else) if they are going to be away from a computer for a while and their turn is coming up. No rush over weekends, sometimes no picks are made.
Where is Roy? It shouldn't take too long to make a 1st round pick since its hard to go wrong. 3rd round picks are a little tougher.
1:41 PM, February 02, 2007
I don't think he was ready for the draft to start, so he may be frantically trying to do some kind of statistical analysis. Or, he may actually be working on his research so he can finally get out of Baltimore.
1:43 PM, February 02, 2007
Hey, no need to get out of Baltimore! If he sticks around long enough, they may actually get a baseball team worth watching!
I agree that he probably wasn't ready. I'm glad we got started early, but I figured it might catch someone unaware. I'm just glad Peter's 1st round pick was already made. I imagine we might get stuck on him for a little while, no telling if he is on call or something tonight.
1:45 PM, February 02, 2007
Can you reverse the comments so the most recent appear at the top? You should be able to, I'd think.
1:58 PM, February 02, 2007
I don't know how. If you know how, let me know.
2:04 PM, February 02, 2007
I think we had the same request about the comments about the same spot in the discussion last year.
2:07 PM, February 02, 2007
Never underestimate getting out of Baltimore.
2:13 PM, February 02, 2007
Roy knows how to do it.
2:16 PM, February 02, 2007
It's capable because of the powers of RSS!
2:16 PM, February 02, 2007
Roy, you realize that in Jeopardy you only get 30 seconds to question the final answer. I'm whistling the song and your time has expired.
2:16 PM, February 02, 2007
Maybe Roy is just having problems updating the picture of himself that goes next to his draft choices
2:19 PM, February 02, 2007
Tom made a funny. I forgot about that.
2:21 PM, February 02, 2007
My two top choices stolen out from under me right before my turn.
3:58 PM, February 02, 2007
Milledge is worth an 18th rounder, if not for this year for down the road ... maybe ... and Maholm started to come around at the end of last year, I thought. Plus, guys named Pat are always good ... Pat Konerko, Pat Molitor, etc.
4:05 PM, February 02, 2007
And, Milledge may be trade bait late in the year.
4:11 PM, February 02, 2007
Jason likes to grab people like Milledge before that ... and according to my brother's analysis, Maholm was worthy of a 14th round pick based on last year's performance. So, given that he's an up-and-comer, I felt he was worthy of a 14th round pick ... plus, it's not like I had to pass over good players to use my keepers ... the cupboard was pretty bare.
4:25 PM, February 02, 2007
Wow, good 1st round picks everyone. Before the draft, I was hoping at least 1 (and maybe 2) of the guys drafted before me would fall to me. Not a single one fell to me and I was stuck with my back-up options (not that they are so bad). Seriously, you all had to pick exactly the guys I had my eye on? The makings of a competitive year.
4:30 PM, February 02, 2007
Oh yeah, and Maholm was quite good after the all-star break last year. He will probably have more value then a 14th round pick, though it is arguable whether he would have actually been drafted by the 14th round. Either way, I agree that Evan didn't really pass over anyone more worthy of being kept.
4:31 PM, February 02, 2007
Zack, I'll take your word for it.
Go Rice!!! Hopefully Peter is at Rice's season opener instead of at the hospital or thinking about fantasy baseball...
12:50 PM, February 03, 2007
Jason - you are right. I was at the Rice game watching Rice win 5-0 over CMSU. Savery pitched the first two and looked great. I ended up getting 4 season tickets with some friends - so should be a fun season.
As for this draft - damn you Jason. You took the two guys I was thinking about. Of course, I don't think I can go wrong with Roy - super consistent and should get more wins with the Astros' improved bats....
3:31 PM, February 03, 2007
Ok ... let me be the first to second guess my own pick ... I may have reached for Furcal a bit. Anyone want to tell me that the NL SS pool has is lacking and I made a great play grabbing a fairly consistent avg., run, and steals guy before he was gone?
9:46 PM, February 03, 2007
I agree with Zack. Furcal was a slight reach, but he's still young enough to have a career year. Even then, its not so much of a reach that you should question the decision. If he fit the profile you were looking for (SB at a thin position), then you done good. Zack is right, SS is quite thin beyond the top few.
Sheets is that good if he's healthy. No telling until the end of the year though.
10:26 PM, February 03, 2007
If it means anything coming from the ninth place finisher, I was going to take Furcal. If I hadn't MP would have
11:01 PM, February 03, 2007
Damn, I thought Ramirez was off the board! Oh well, I've got my steals. I definitely would have gone with Ramirez ... I thought someone kept him. I guess I better get my shit in order.
8:40 AM, February 04, 2007
Yeah, but at the same time 3B is a lot deeper then SS. Tom had a good point, no way Furcal would have made it back to you and there are still good 3B out there.
8:54 AM, February 04, 2007
About time Carpenter went. He's the consensus #1 NL pitcher, though honestly I have no problem with Oswalt, Zambrano, and Peavy going before him. Peavy has the most talent, but has the highest injury risk. Zambrano could be about the same as Peavy if he could cut down on walks. Even then, he probably still has a higher WHIP then the other 3. Oswalt probably won't K as many as Carpenter, but really it is a crap-shoot between those 4.
I was tempted to take one of them, but since I kept 3 pitchers I figured I should go for hitters.
10:24 AM, February 04, 2007
Yeah, I was surprised by the early pitcher run ... good thing I held onto Penny or he'd be off the board now too, right?
10:52 AM, February 04, 2007
Off topic, but who is the most dominanting athlete in his or her sport? A lot of people are talking about Tiger vs. Federer. I say Takeru Kobayashi.
Serious, I just saw him eat 58 bratwurst in 10 minutes and then 97 Krystal burgers (including bun) in 8 minutes. He has never lost to a human (although he did lose to a Kodiak polar bear once). Tiger and Federer have both lost, so until someone takes down Kobayashi, I don't think there is any contest.
12:08 PM, February 04, 2007
[There's a Catch]
12:16 PM, February 04, 2007
7:57 PM, February 04, 2007
8:14 PM, February 04, 2007
I've tried three times to post a reply to the Woods-Federer dispute. Now, I don't really care.
If you had to put all your money on one them to win his next tournament, who would you pick? If you don't say Federer, you don't deserve your money
9:15 PM, February 04, 2007
10:03 PM, February 04, 2007
6:44 AM, February 05, 2007
Misko says:
Hey guys I think I am on the clock, however I am also in a deposition today. I will definately be headed back to the office, though. So expect my picks later today. Sorry for the hold up.
7:26 AM, February 05, 2007
What about brilliance? Can you rush that?
7:37 AM, February 05, 2007
Remember everyone, feel free to use queues if you are going to be away from a computer for a while. To do this, just send me (or someone else if you trust them more) a list of players you would like to draft, along with instructions of who to draft (i.e. highest player from the list that isn't drafted before your turn, highest pitcher from the list if no hitters are drafted before your pick, etc.).
This will help speed up the draft process.
Not saying Misko needed to do it in this case, but just wanted to send a reminder.
I will be out of town from today through Feb. 15, so I may send queues to someone.
Jason
7:45 AM, February 05, 2007
As to Kodiak Bears - I've never been to Kodiak. I do not claim to know anything of the island nor about its resident bear population. I do know that given its geography, it doesn't surprise me that they aren't polar bears. I don't know if I copied that from the article I was reading at the time or if I'm just stupid (probably both).
7:48 AM, February 05, 2007
So, this is someone's shot at getting back at our commish!
7:48 AM, February 05, 2007
I have never been to Kodiak and I know that Kodiak Bears aren't polar bears ... I guess that is just supporting evidence for Jason's theory.
7:54 AM, February 05, 2007
I suspect a more likely answer is that I just don't care.
However, the correct answer is that I cleverly inserted a mistake into my off-topic rant that would occupy my competition's feeble minds in the coming days so they were devastatingly distracted from their draft picks and hence, unable to compete.
8:34 AM, February 05, 2007
Unfortunately, your evil plan has failed as no picks have occurred lately as we wait for a deposition to occur. Maybe Misko is working against you!
8:57 AM, February 05, 2007
Misko says:
Hey guys, depo still going strong, they almost NEVER go this long AND I am in BR (and hour and a half away from my cozy office in NOLA). It is 4PM and still not over so there is a chance I may not even head back to my desk today. Sorry, I'll pick FIRST thing tomorrow AM and promise to email J-Big players in the future.
If you all hate me now, wait till I have a 20 point lead by mid-May!!
1:56 PM, February 05, 2007
Instead of posting reasons why you are not picking, why don't you just post who you are picking???
1:59 PM, February 05, 2007
So much for the "draft picks only" idea for the draft board, huh?
2:52 PM, February 05, 2007
4:15 PM, February 05, 2007
Since I know all your worlds were coming to a crashing end because I wasn't just picking someone off the top of my head in a break during a deposition, I dragged myself into work at 6:15PM to make my damn picks (and impress my bosses, though)
So see the board, in like 10 mins.
4:16 PM, February 05, 2007
Two streaky lefties ... I guess that will keep things interesting.
4:48 PM, February 05, 2007
thanks misko
5:23 PM, February 05, 2007
If it's applicable to Tiger v. Roger, it's applicable to baseball v. bball? I figured I'd bring it back to baseball because it's a fantasy baseball draft discussion board. If it's harder to win half the golf tournaments than it is to win all the tennis tournaments, Roger winning all the tennis tournaments is similarly dominating to Tiger winning half the golf tournaments.
5:48 PM, February 05, 2007
All Brewers, all day long
5:57 PM, February 05, 2007
I can't believe that I just chose Pierre...
6:31 PM, February 05, 2007
Best (fantasy) player left on the board. I hate him, even though I've had him in Zack's league the past 2 years. Of course, that's mostly because I have an aversion to leadoff hitters with pitiful OBPs. Pierre needs to learn how to take a walk or learn how to be disruptive out of the 8 spot.
6:39 PM, February 05, 2007
I can't believe I have two SS's!
6:43 PM, February 05, 2007
Lopez will be a 2B soon, just not yet.
6:47 PM, February 05, 2007
I wondered about that because he's listed as a 2B on ESPN. Awesome!
7:25 PM, February 05, 2007
I don't know whether he will start the year with 2B eligibility in Yahoo! He didn't play there at all last year, but with another uber-stud available as SS, I guess the Nats figured they could move Lopez to 2B.
7:36 PM, February 05, 2007
I'm sorry, was that a joke? If so good one. If not, that's sad.
7:40 PM, February 05, 2007
Sorry for the delay, insomniacs...
8:21 AM, February 06, 2007
For the sake of the Dodgers I'd love to see Pierre moved to the 8 spot.
For the sake of my team I'd hate to see Pierre moved to the 8 spot.
9:41 AM, February 06, 2007
Juan Pierre has the smallest head I've ever seen.
9:43 AM, February 06, 2007
that's why he can run so fast... no weight to carry.
9:51 AM, February 06, 2007
I'm sorry, but which head are we talking about? Justin's comment makes sense either way, but Tom's comment could be confusing.
Unless Juan Pierre is establishing a non-profit and he and Tom are on the same pee schedule...
11:00 AM, February 06, 2007
Dude, you watch too much Scrubs.
Have we devolved to dick comments already? If so, I've got a great one.
How's that for ambiguous?
11:03 AM, February 06, 2007
Nice. But in the future, please type it as "d!ck" for those of us with fragile eyes.
11:08 AM, February 06, 2007
Ok, let's all keep our d!cks away from Jason's eyes
11:12 AM, February 06, 2007
I'm at work and don't have access to my email - so some let Jason know he is up with two picks. Of course, he checks this board every 10 sec so he actually has probably already made his pick....
11:15 AM, February 06, 2007
Surprised the dick talk has distracted everyone so much that no one takes issue with my Burrell & Lidge picks. I felt like both were a little early, but I'm expecting bounce-backs from both and hoping they are worth these picks, even if there was some chance of them making it back to me.
3:07 PM, February 06, 2007
A lot of us have questioned each others picks, but lets give it up for J-Big for being the first to openly question his own pick. Nice one there, champ!
On a lighter note, my job is making my eyeballs bleed. Thank goodness next Friday is my last day here!
3:17 PM, February 06, 2007
Hmm, we'll see if Chipper stays healthy. He can certainly still hit if he stays on the field.
Some singers don't speak the day of a concert to preserve their voices. I don't think Chipper should walk before he plays games to make sure his legs stay healthy.
3:27 PM, February 06, 2007
Who is this Chipper guy? I have never heard of him. Is he of any relation to that Larry Jones who plays for Atlanta?
4:00 PM, February 06, 2007
You were bummed that Wagner got taken the pick before you were up, weren't you?
And, I thought I was the 1st to question a pick (Furcal).
4:22 PM, February 06, 2007
I was bummed, but I figured Peter the Astros fan wouldn't overlook the former Astro. Hopefully it works out for me. My history of drafting closers in this league (Gagne last year) hasn't exactly been stellar.
4:34 PM, February 06, 2007
Great pick Zack. Lucky to have Smoltz fall that far. To me, the 2 biggest surprises so far are Carpenter and Smoltz falling as far as they did. Both could have gone 1-1.5 rounds earlier and no one would have questioned their value that early.
I really was tempted to take him, but I just figured I didn't need a 4th starting pitcher quite yet. Of course, depending on Young to be my ace is kind of scary...
7:05 PM, February 06, 2007
I was definitely going to take Smoltz with my pick if he fell to me, but I'm happy with "Wife Beater" Myers.
7:29 PM, February 06, 2007
7:37 PM, February 06, 2007
If only Myers didn't pitch in a park the size of Adair-Kennedy ... even Jason, Roy and I can hit the ball out of there.
8:13 PM, February 06, 2007
Extra-Terrestrial,
Did you ever hit one out of A-K? Can't remember how long you played baseball. Did you play again your senior year like all the other Houston (coach, not city) pansies who deprived the baseball team of their talents until their senior year (specifically Lockhart, but I'm sure there were others).
They moved homeplate back at one point, making the field a little bigger then when Roy and I played there.

Where is Adair-Kennedy? Around downtown? Burbs?
7:44 AM, February 07, 2007
A-K is in the "Valley", which is basically suburban Juneau. It is definitely not downtown. It is ballpark in Juneau for the high school and older rec teams.
8:14 AM, February 07, 2007
8:16 AM, February 07, 2007
I think the wife-beater has a little more potential for a breakout year at this point in his career. Especially if he starts concentrating on pitching rather than domestic abuse...
I agree with Jason on Smoltz, very good pick-up at this point. But I do believe that I was ridiculed by some for taking him in the 4th round last year... At this point I'm wondering if 2005 was an outlier for Willis and whether he'll ever have another year quite so good. Of course, so far he's been great on odd years, so it could work out. Schmidt was next up on my list, he should be solid in Dodger Stadium.
9:53 AM, February 07, 2007
A comment on the rounds:
Comparing the rounds that a player was picked last year with the round he was picked this doesn't work because of the keepers. Many, if not most, of our keepers would have been taken by this point in the draft. That really makes players chosen at this point equivalent to eighth round picks (or so, the math and relative rankings would differ by player and manager).
This is how I rationalize taking someone like Mike Cameron in the 4th round. I lie to myself and say that this is really the 8th or 9th round and I got a steal.
10:07 AM, February 07, 2007
Tom, you are exactly right.
I'm still kicking myself over my last two picks. Sure they could both work out. But if I was going to reach, I should have gone with 1 safe guy and 1 reach, not 2 reaches. Aargh.
10:15 AM, February 07, 2007
Am I the only one who ISNT questioning his own picks? (Utley, Carpenter, Delgado, Schmidt.) All you guys seem to think you are making mistakes as you are making them. My only problem now is that 4.9 was my last pick until 7.2 I wonder what third-string leftfielder will be available then.
11:37 AM, February 07, 2007
I picked. I don't know who is next.
12:03 PM, February 07, 2007
oops, Roy's pick wasn't there when I put up Holliday. Jason, do your job and erase... and was that ANOTHER reach with Ensberg?
12:41 PM, February 07, 2007
Yes, I am doing quite a bit of reaching. I made the decision I would rather get the players I want and hope they rebound (like I expect) rather then go with guys I don't like for various reasons.
Basically, I don't really regret my picks, but they are making me nervous. Burrell might be the only regret, mainly because he still might be around. Feel free to make me feel better by saying someone else would have taken him by now...
1:32 PM, February 07, 2007
I wouldn't have taken him (or Ensberg or Lidge) by now, but I'm not surprised to see them gone at this point. Burrell doesn't seem like much of a stretch. He should put up good numbers and get a lot of RBI opportunities down in fifth spot in the order. I only draft Brewers and Padres, so none of these guys fit into my master plan.
1:45 PM, February 07, 2007
Then how does Cabrera fit into that plan?
I was actually hoping to pick up Ensberg (in the 7th round).
4:40 PM, February 07, 2007
I was going to take Ensberg this round if he was available ... and if Zack would ever pick!
4:56 PM, February 07, 2007
Taking Ensberg worked out so well for me last year that I thought I'd try it again. Oh well.
5:01 PM, February 07, 2007
Cabrera's hobbies include making his own beer and fathering illegitimate children. Hence, he is both a Padre and a Brewer.
5:18 PM, February 07, 2007
Wow, good save!
5:35 PM, February 07, 2007
Between Ben and Zack, I have been humming the Jeopardy theme song entirely too much today!
As a great philosopher once said, "Bring it on!"
7:17 PM, February 07, 2007
I would like to point out that NO ONE HAS LEFT A QUEUE with me this year. Don't be afraid. If you pick close to me and don't trust me with your queue, send it to someone who just picked and won't pick again for a little while. Or send a short queue with only 1-3 players.
7:18 PM, February 07, 2007
Phillips was mine!
10:03 PM, February 07, 2007
Kent was on my bounce-back (slightly) list. I like Phillips too, but I'm worried about him AVG. It really fell off after the break and he never hit for much AVG in the minors. I already have Andruw and Pat the Bat to drag down my average...
10:07 AM, February 08, 2007
I like the RJ pick. I was thinking about him too. My only concern is the back surgery. Moving from the AL east to the NL can do good things for a pitcher (see Clemens, Roger and Arroyo, Bronson). It doesn't always work, but its probably worth the risk at this point.
10:17 AM, February 08, 2007
Misko says:
1:03 PM, February 08, 2007
Misko:
Did anyone ever see that show Man v.
1:12 PM, February 08, 2007
I do remember that show. Wasn't there a segment when Anna Nicole Smith fought Death? I think she lost.
1:18 PM, February 08, 2007
The bear won the eating contest. I think it would have been more entertaining if Kobayashi and the bear had matched off eating salmon out of an Alaska stream ... yummy, spawning dog salmon!
I thought Randy was a reach ... he's getting old and isn't exactly Roger Clemens when it comes to fitness. He's had a lot of back trouble and hasn't looked good the last couple of years, although the move to the NL does help ... I can't see it helping that much, but, I guess we'll see.
Anyone in an AL league going to give Pettitte a shot this year?
2:13 PM, February 08, 2007
I actually wanted Phillips for his upside ... he could hit for a high avg., steal a bunch of bags and bang some HR's out of the 2B position. I don't know if Kent still has a big season in him. But, Phillips could also go in the crapper and get demoted to the minors, only to be called up in September when the rosters expand, too. That said, I needed someone with a little upside because my team is going to suck!
2:15 PM, February 08, 2007
I disagree a little on RJ. I don't think he'll at all approach his previous NL seasons with AZ. Still, his peripheral numbers from last season indicate he had a little bad luck and/or was facing better hitters.
RJ: 1.24 WHIP, 172 K
Jason Schmidt: 1.26 WHIP, 180 K
Yet RJ's ERA was 5.00 and Schmidt was 3.59. Perhaps a bit of a simplistic analysis, but useful none-the-less.
2:34 PM, February 08, 2007
It's not all WHIP and K's ... what about HR's? Is Randy prone to giving up big innings? I think the biggest issue with Randy is whether or not he's going to be healthy at that age.
2:39 PM, February 08, 2007
I was just trying to point out that the ERA was probably inflated some. He did give up more HR then he used to, so it is a concern (28 vs. Schmidt's 21, I think).
Still facing pitchers instead of DH's and getting out of the AL East should decrease HR a little.
I agree, biggest question will be health. If he throws 200+ innings, he should be a good pitcher (not excellent like he used to be).
2:53 PM, February 08, 2007
Is Peter dead?
4:03 PM, February 08, 2007
Here's 2006 runs/game for each division:
AL East 4.96
AL Cent 5.08
AL West 4.83
NL East 5.00
NL Cent 4.53
NL West 4.80
So you might expect a change of about .2 in Randy Johnson's ERA just from the move. But he was pitching for the Yankees, not against them, and the other AL East teams had an average of 4.76.
It is certainly true that Clemens' and Arroyo's ERAs dropped. But, they went to the NL Central, for one thing. And even that doesn't explain more than about half a run. They must also have improved their pitching (at least in terms of ERA). Clemens' ERA had to drop because the Astros weren't giving him any run support, right? He was trying to win.
4:10 PM, February 08, 2007
Sorry about the delay in making my pick. Had some "issues" keep me busy at work today that I had not anticipated. I'll try to keep things moving in the future.
4:40 PM, February 08, 2007
Of course, it could be argued that the stats are skewed because the pitchers have been better in the AL recently as well ... so that helps keep the runs per game down in spite of the better hitters and DH in the AL. Are there better pitchers in the AL? I have a hard time distinguishing because of the better lineups and DH in the AL. Imagine what Santana and Liriano (when healthy) would do in the NL!
6:08 PM, February 08, 2007
Jason, you're holding up the party. What are you doing, watching Grey's Anatomy?
6:09 PM, February 08, 2007
Maybe you should have left me a queue so we can move this along!
6:10 PM, February 08, 2007
I found girl in columbia and am away from computer. using treo instead.
peter is withdrawing from the league for being a little bitch and taking freel right before me. bitch. I nned a 2b and some SB. He is the guy I've been keeping my eye on all round. bastard!
any thoughts on hamels vs cain? I think hamels has a little more upside (more K and lower WHIP) but is more of a health risk. tough choice. hamels also pays for better offense, but in worse ballpark.
8:07 PM, February 08, 2007
Roy has my queue ... so, it's his fault if my pick isn't made.
8:14 PM, February 08, 2007
I would have gone with Cain. At this point I'm thinking Cain is a better candidate for a breakout, while Hamels has "Mark Prior" written all over him.
10:49 PM, February 08, 2007
Yes it does. I'm beginning to second guess my keeper strategy now that I'm looking at everybody else's teams beside mine. I think my top six players are as good as any team's, but I'm not going to have a whole lot of depth.
2:55 PM, February 09, 2007
I passed on keeping Beltran in the 2nd round for a reason.
Of course, the reason was that he would have been the 1st player taken in the 2nd round, which wouldn't have been that much of a discount...
But the other reason is because I thought there was move value keeping 6 guys then 5. Of course, some of my keepers (Hill and Olsen) are both injury risks and might be very inconsistent. Drew and Gonzalez will both be average for their positions (though they do have room for growth). Its just helpful to get "average" players that late in the draft. Really just depends on your keeper possibilities though.
And yes, it looks very weird.
3:14 PM, February 09, 2007
Unlike last year, no real run on closers. They seem to be falling at the same rate as any other position. Curious.
3:18 PM, February 09, 2007
3:24 PM, February 09, 2007
I kept:
Johnson
Hawpe
Fielder
Hall
Wainwright
Capuano
I traded Maine and Duncan for Fielder just before the draft. Fielder and Hall are 8th round picks, so one of them counts as my 7th round pick.
6:36 PM, February 09, 2007
Would our commish screw up the draft list? Never!
7:48 PM, February 09, 2007
The head says "no" but the heart says "yes". I did not screw up the draft list, Evan and Tom made a trade just before the deadline, as previously stated. Fielder counted as a 7th round keeper even though he should have been an 8th round keeper, because Tom kept 2 players drafted in the 8th round. A bit confusing, but that's the way it is. Pick away.
Plus, Tom is the only guy more atuned to this then me (because he loves his job so much, I imagine) and would have promptly protested if we were wronging him in some way.
By the delay, you'd think he picked Ichiro or something...
8:59 PM, February 09, 2007
Can I pick yet?
9:47 PM, February 09, 2007
No problem ... I was up early because my wife had to go in to work (overtime on a big project) and she woke me up because someone, during the middle of the right, ran into our mailbox and knocked it over. This is no Juneau mailbox with a wooden post ... this is an Oklahoma mailbox made out of brick. We think so drunk idiot forgot that the road curves and jumped the curb and knocked the sucker down. So, I have now picked and I don't think too much of a delay occurred ... although, without the mailbox incident, I definitely wouldn't have been up and picking at this hour!

Monsenor Misceaux says:
Whatt kind of eligability do people think Rich Aurillia will have? He is a utility, guy, right?? So like (1B, 2B, 3B, CI, MI)??
Someone help me out, please.
Bummer about tthe mailbox. I wouldn't have thoughtt things like that happen in the Big Sky country of Okl. That seems like a New Orleans-y type story. Did anyone see the latest murder involved:
1- the "victim" had been in town for less than 4 hours and beat the perp up real bad
2- The prep goes home and his MOM (Yes, Mother) gave him a gun and told him to kill the kid
3- He goes and shots the victim.
7:21 AM, February 10, 2007
Aurilia should be eligible at all of the infield positions (barely at 2B). Until Yahoo gets its fantasy stuff up and running, you should check out the player pages on cbssportsline. It lists how many games a player played and started in at each position.
8:13 AM, February 10, 2007
Misko:
Thanks, I plan to use Rich Aurillia's steller defense, versitility, unrelenting effort and posittive, team-first attitude to propel my team to victory!!
8:56 AM, February 10, 2007
Misko: and before J-Big and the rest of the grammar gestapo swoop down on me like the spelling wizards they are, the "T" button is stticking on my CPU, I know there is only one t in positive... and sticking.
And yes smartasses, I did have to look up how to spell gestapo. gustopo was so far off, google didn't even suggest the right way.
Anyone need a lawyer!! I give 10% off for every mispelled word in any court pleading I file!!
9:01 AM, February 10, 2007
I would normally be a little reluctant to give away my killer tools for nothing. But I'm feeling strangely generous this afternoon. So, here you go. The position eligibility of every player in MLB on one page. Knock yourself silly. Usual disclaimers apply.
10:35 AM, February 10, 2007
A run on old, left-handed OF's. How long will this one last?
2:38 PM, February 11, 2007
I needed speed and there isn't that much left out there. Picking Roberts immediately after Griffey and Edmonds was blind luck.
2:47 PM, February 11, 2007
tsk tsk, you cant talk about a player who hasnt been selected yet. There should be a penalty for that...like loss of your next draft pick or something. Yes, that would be a grand punishment.
5:19 PM, February 11, 2007
In Justin's defense, he can always argue that they were guys that shouldn't be drafted...
5:32 PM, February 11, 2007
I would like to quote the description of this post: "Use this post to discuss keepers, undrafted players, and whatever else you feel like."
Keepers, UNDRAFTED players, and whatever I feel like. Anyway, if there should be any punishments in this draft it should be for taking over a day to make a selection. One word: queue
6:00 PM, February 11, 2007
queue is not a word. it is a letter.
Hmm, funny how I screwed up the description. I don't really care when it is someone everyone knows about, but others might. I'm more concerned about identifying potential sleepers & keepers.
6:14 PM, February 11, 2007
Misko: J-Big, ignore my queue request. I have internet at this depo, so I'll make my own picks!!
8:11 AM, February 13, 2007
Are we allowed to make trades during the draft? Can we trade picks? Players? Combinations?
2:31 PM, February 13, 2007
I think Prior will win his 3rd straight Cy Young Award this season. It's a lock. He has such a smooth motion and the ball just flies out of his hand. Plus, he has solid control and filthy breaking stuff. He's damn near unhittable! I can't believe he wasn't gone in the 1st round, much less lasting until the 10th.
2:31 PM, February 14, 2007
Sorry for the delay, I was at a location where blogs are blocked and my idiot (anyone who knows Roy will agree with me) brother wouldn't send me the list of picked players! So, I couldn't pick until I got home.
2:38 PM, February 14, 2007
Misko: what team does Adam Hyzdu play for?? That guys is AWESOME!! I remember I asw him play in Altoona, then he played for the Bucs, he always played really well. I remember we started an informal fan club Adam Hyzdu fan club called "The Hyz-dudes"
1:15 PM, February 15, 2007
Thanks for writing this.
